Touch ID FAQ

I was trying to get Touch ID working with my new iPad Air 2 (which supports Touch ID). In reading the FAQ at https://support.1password.com/touch-id-faq, I found this:

NOTE
Touch ID needs to be configured to unlock your device (Settings app > Touch ID > Phone Unlock) before you will see the option to turn it on in 1Password

I took that to mean the Settings of the iPad itself, which is usually where I look when Settings are mentioned. However, when I looked in the iPad's Settings, there was nothing there which matched the FAQ. After some digging, I looked inside the 1P app, under the gear icon, where I found what the FAQ had mentioned.

What I'm asking for is an update of the FAQ note to make it clear that the settings in question are to be found within the 1P app's Settings, not in the iPad's Settings.

That would make the process much less confusing - at least for me.

  • Hi @Zeke,

That particular line does actually refer to the iOS Settings app, not the Settings screen within 1Password. The setting in question is in the spot the documentation refers to (though on my device it it called Touch ID & Passcode).

    Thanks.

I had done that, both on my iPad Air 2 and on my iPhone 6, but the Touch ID feature wasn't working until I went to the gear icon/security and activated the Touch ID slideer there. Just to verify/report, I turned off the slider within 1P on my iPhone 6, which usually works fine with Touch ID. The button is blue within 1P, but is green within the iPhone's Settings.

As I was expecting, the Touch ID feature no longer worked, even though all of the sliders in the iPhone's Settings are still on (green). I then relaunched the 1P app, entered the Master password manually (since Touch ID was non-functional at that point), and activated the blue slide button, as above. I then exited the 1P app and relaunched it.

Voila! The Touch ID feature works again.

I can send you screen shots if you'd like, but I think you get the drift. Turning on Touch ID is a two step process. Just turning it on in iPhone's or iPad's Settings isn't sufficient. With Touch ID off within the 1P app, the green selectors remain selected in Settings, so the two aren't linked, apparently.

    Hi @Zeke,

That's correct; to use Touch ID with 1Password, you must have Touch ID enabled both on your device and in 1Password itself. Our goal is to give our customers as much control over how they access their 1Password vaults as is reasonable, so we've made unlocking the app with Touch ID both optional (you can use 1Password just fine by entering your Master Password) and opt-in (so that it's a conscious decision).

    Thanks for your feedback!

In line with my original request, I'd suggest that the FAQ be updated to say that both the sliders for the iPad/iPhone (green) and the slider within 1P (blue) must be activated to make Touch ID work. The FAQ only mentions going to Settings.app (Which one? The one for the phone/ipad, or the one within 1P? Or both? It doesn't really make that clear) Even the wording "Settings.app" is confusing, since Settings is a built-in iPad/iPhone function and not really an "app", as such. The Settings slider within 1P isn't really an "app", either. It's a setting within the 1P program. The FAQ doesn't detail all of the actions required to make Touch ID work. If I was confused by what it was telling me to do, I'm pretty sure that another person reading it will be as well. Hope that that explains my concerns.

  • Hi @Zeke, thanks for taking the time to explain that so clearly. I'll file an internal issue to bring some clarity to the Touch ID instructions. Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help you out.

I am still wrestling with this problem and cannot make 1P work with my iPad Air. For example I can't find a blue slider in 1P!
    Any progress?

    Hi @fmyers,

I'd love to help you get Touch ID working with 1Password. Do you currently unlock your iPad using Touch ID? If you do:
    1. Launch 1Password.
    2. Tap Settings > Security. The screen should show Lock Now, Lock on Exit, Auto-Lock, and Touch ID.
    3. Tap the slider next to Touch ID to turn on the feature (the slider color will change to blue from gray).

If you don't unlock your iPad using your fingerprint, you'll need Launch the Settings App on your iPad, then tap Touch ID & Passcode to set up Touch ID. Then, follow the steps I outlined above. You might need to restart your iPad to get 1Password to realize that you set up Touch ID :)

Please let us know if this helps!
