Master password and iCloud sync problems on Mac and iPhone
Help!

You give very little information.
Where did you enter the new password? Does the new password work or only the old one?
If, for instance, you are syncing iPhone and Mac and changed the password on the Mac, there are steps to take before the iPhone will accept the new password.
But until we know something about your setup and what you did it's not really possible to help.

Thanks for your consideration. I did the update on my MacBook Pro and changed my password. I sink using iCloud. So I loved it because I was able to use it from my IPhone 5s (always on iCloud). But for some reason now the the app on my iPhone is I stuck on my old password. The only reason I know that is because the hint shows up (iPhone) as the old one. I uninstalled, reinstalled, I even reset the whole phone! But it just doesn't seems to sink with the iCloud new password.
By the way, I purchased the app through Apple.
Thanks!

So the new password doesn't work on the iPhone?
Because of the way syncing passwords work, the procedure is a little uninituitive.
You need to use the old password on the iPhone and allow syncing. After that the old password will still work until the first time you use the new password. Once you have used the new password the old one will no longer work.
But it sounds as though you can't get the new password to work at all, in which case someone more expert will have to answer.

Hi @applepie2020,
The procedure should work as danco described, however in certain rare circumstances the password change may not be properly synced. In these cases you can simply change the Master Password on the iPhone to the same one now being used elsewhere:
1Password > Settings > Security > Change Master Password
( https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/settings-security.html )
Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion, but it did not
Work. I am now with another problem. I had to restore my Mac and when I try to restore the .pif file (backup) file from my drive it just doesn't load... :(I was so happy with this app... But it
Is becoming a snowball of issues0 -
OK! I am getting a bit desperate. I made all the updates on iPhone and Macbook pro. The update with El Capitan gave me tons of problems with the keychain and consequently i had to do a total restore and then reinstall all again. Again problems with keychain. I do have all my data saved on iCloud because that is how i did following your steps upon app purchase. Now, the app does not accept my master password!!!! PLEASE HELP ME! I already did the search on the utilities keychain and it cannot find my master password!! Ah! I also cannot login using my iPhone due to the main problem above.. :(
I do have a .pif file which was created when i did a back up. But how can i access the .pif FILES?

If you really have a .1pif file that will be unencrypted so you should be able to start over, although because you have previously sync'd using iCloud you may also need to re-set your iCloud data.
However, you need to be absolutely sure you have everything in a .1pif file before proceeding—because the instructions to which I've linked will erase all your 1P encrypted data.
Please also note that you shouldn't leave the .1pif file lying around once you've used it, because the contents are unencrypted.

Thanks Stephan! The pif file is locked (?) would have direction on how to go about that? Thanks so much!!

Hi @applepie2020,
Thanks for your suggestion, but it did not
Work. What do you mean? In what way did it not work? Can you please elaborate?
It sounds like you have other computer issues going on that may be exacerbating any issues you're having with 1Password.
Instead of restoring a 1PIF file (which we do not recommend keeping as a backup, as the contents are entirely unencrypted), you could re-establish sync with iCloud. That would pull in all of your most recent information.
Thanks.

Hi @applepie2020,
I saw the new discussion you started in our Mac forum but noticed it seems to be a continuation of this existing thread in our iOS forum. I've merged them together to avoid confusion.
In addition to answering the questions from Ben, can you please give us some more specific information about the steps you've taken, and the exact steps you're currently trying? After reading your messages, I'm a little confused about what's currently happening and what led to this point. For example, it sounds like you had to erase your Mac and either start over from scratch or restore from a full backup. Was 1Password restored from a backup, or did you need to reinstall it? Did you need to go through the setup of 1Password on your Mac again? If so, is that where you're currently stuck, trying to sync your vault from iCloud, but it won't accept your master password? Or did you create a vault on your Mac and are able to unlock that, but cannot sync that vault with iCloud? Have you tried both the new and old master passwords?
Also, it sounds like you deleted & reinstalled 1Password on your iPhone. Did you set it up as a new user with a new/empty vault and are trying to sync that with iCloud? Or did you choose to sync your vault from iCloud during the setup, but are unable to proceed because it won't accept your master password?
The more details you can give, the better. Thanks in advance!

Thank for your help.
It all started with me changing the master password while on Mac. I did the change and clicked "sink". Then immediately after I went to my IPhone and clicked sink. However when I tried to do that it crashed and when the phone came back I noticed that it was still on my old pass. So I typed my old pass, but it told me it was wrong! I tried again, and again. The. I did type the new pass just to see if there was a glitche. Nothing. I then reset all settings on my iPhone. Still, no luck. I am still encountering problems with the keychain on my Mac. Which also went backwords. My old pass hit shows up on the Mac too now. Please help me...

Hi @applepie2020 ,
First, we do not recommend using 1pif as a backup, since it is unencrypted. 1pif files are intended to be used temporarily for exporting and importing. In 1Password on your Mac, go to the Preferences and click on Backups. There you can create and manage backups of your 1Password database in a secure manner.
Now, regarding your old password hint, it's likely it did revert to the old one since you said you had to restore. What is the state of your Mac 1Password now. Are you able to log in? Do you have all of your items there? If we can get that fixed first, then it'll be much easier to fix on iOS. If you are still having trouble on Mac, please provide details.
Thank you,

Hi Kevin, I did not create the pif files. I always just clicked the option on the app "backup" and that was how this file was created. I sill can't open the backups. :(

Hello @applepie2020,
There's definitely some confusion going on. A
.1pif' can only be created by exporting a vault from either inside 1Password for Mac or Windows. The backup option in both 1Password for Mac and iOS create files that end in
.1p4_zip`. These are very different. The easiest way to tell is to try opening the
.1pif
in a text editor like TextWrangler or even TextEdit and dragging the.1pif
file to the dock icon to open it. Does it open and do the contents look somewhat like this? (a snippet from the 1PIF generated by exporting our demo vault){"uuid":"912FECB2C3DD4B5B8EB9209964C37A6E","updatedAt":1410839995,"locationKey":"amazon.com","securityLevel":"SL5","openContents":{"faveIndex":3000},"faveIndex":3000,"contentsHash":"f85ccca7","title":"Amazon","location":"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ap\/signin?_encoding=UTF8&openid.assoc_handle=usflex&openid.claimed_id=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.identity=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.mode=checkid_setup&openid.ns=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0&openid.ns.pape=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fextensions%2Fpape%2F1.0&openid.pape.max_auth_age=0&openid.return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fyourstore%2Fhome%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dnav_custrec_signin","secureContents":{"htmlName":"signIn","fields":[{"value":"wendy.h.appleseed@gmail.com","id":"ap_email","name":"email","type":"E","designation":"username"},{"value":"0","id":"ap_signin_create_radio","name":"create","type":"R"},{"value":"1","id":"ap_signin_existing_radio","name":"create","type":"R"},{"value":"KtLUcucVLaZCoZKxCcVdMQgyPEQHefAU","id":"ap_password","name":"password","type":"P","designation":"password"},{"value":"Sign in using our secure server ","id":"signInSubmit-input","name":"","type":"I"}],"htmlMethod":"POST","htmlAction":"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ap\/signin","htmlID":"ap_signin_form","URLs":[{"label":"website","url":"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ap\/signin?_encoding=UTF8&openid.assoc_handle=usflex&openid.claimed_id=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.identity=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0%2Fidentifier_select&openid.mode=checkid_setup&openid.ns=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fauth%2F2.0&openid.ns.pape=http%3A%2F%2Fspecs.openid.net%2Fextensions%2Fpape%2F1.0&openid.pape.max_auth_age=0&openid.return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fyourstore%2Fhome%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dnav_custrec_signin"}]},"txTimestamp":1446999080,"createdAt":1410838335,"typeName":"webforms.WebForm"} ***5642bee8-a5ff-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66***
If it looks readable then it will be a 1PIF, an export of the vault but it won't have been possible to have created this by backing up your vault. This type of file you would use File > Import... to import the contents into a new vault rather than a backup file which you would need to restore or use during the startup phase. Please don't post any of the contents of your 1PIF as what I posted above was fake data from a demo vault while your 1PIF will contain real data.
Does any of this help at all? Hopefully it either helps or we learn a bit more about what has happened and what you have to work with.

Yes! That is how the file looks. For some reason now when I attempt to log into the app, it shows a password it tells me to change the "null" password. How do I fix it or how do I log in with a new password, since the one I remember it tells me it is wrong?

Is there a way to import back? Man... What a mess :(

Is this happening on your Mac? If so and if you have a recent 1PIF then I'd recommend starting over and importing the 1PIF as littlebobbytables described. If all goes well there and you are still having difficulties on iOS as well you can uninstall and reinstall the iOS app, and sync with the newly created Mac vault.
Thanks.
Ben
