Is it possible to sync between iOS and Mac via VPN? Will be useful when I am on the road.
I have an OpenVPN server and all my iOS device can connect to it securely. Once connected, I can browse any servers/web applications/folders in my network.
However, when I try to sync 1Password between my iOS device (connected to VPN) and MacBook, it doesn't work. Is there something extra that I need to do?
This is mainly for where I am on the road. iCloud / Dropbox syncing is not an option, since I don't want to put my data on the cloud (the reason I left LastPass and bought 1Password).

@Chuck1313: It sounds like you're trying to use Wi-Fi Sync remotely. Is that correct? it's hard to say what the problem might be, as it obviously wasn't designed with this in mind and isn't supported. VPN configurations can vary greatly, but I'd say that a starting point would be to check your subnet and port settings. Anything that blocks 1Password or Bonjour traffic will prevent the devices from even seeing each other, much less communicating. Is it hosted or a software package you installed as-is, or are you running this server yourself? If the former, you're probably out of luck, because you won't be able to configure it at all. Please let me know what you find! :)

@brenty I use OpenVPN that I host myself. I have allowed NAT routing (Layer 3) from the VPN clients (iOS devices) to the the private subnets (my home network).
From the iOS device (when connected to the VPN), I can reach any of the machines in my home network, including the one where 1Password is installed. That machine also have static IP address.
There is no restriction on the IP or ports. I.e. I can send ICMP packets, SSH or FTP and accessing web app hosted on my machines with specific port number, etc.
With Bonjour Browser app, I can see 1Password advertising it's services. So theoretically, the iOS 1Password app should be able to find the OSX 1Password and sync to it.

Hi @Chuck1313,
Typically broadcast / multicast traffic is not passed over VPN links. I'm not sure if there is a way to enable the passing of such traffic over an OpenVPN tunnel...
Sorry I don't have a definite answer here. Unfortunately this is not a configuration we support.

@bwoodruff Thanks for the info. I think that's the missing key piece: Bonjour is a multicast traffic and won't cross over VPN.
Is it possible to use Wifi sync, switch to iCloud sync, then Wifi sync again? I may have to do that temporarily while traveling.

It isn't impossible, but each time you turn sync off/on 1Password loses its sync state which can lead to conflicts. I'd really only recommend that if you are only editing on one device.
