Can't sync a secondary vault using Wi-Fi from my Mac to my iPhone

I have 1Password V6.1 on my iPhone and iPad. I have just purchased V5.4 for my Mac and have upgraded to the Pro features on my iPhone/iPad with the sole purpose of being able to sync secondary vaults between all platforms. I want to keep my personal stuff separate from my work stuff using different vaults and want to sync only using Wi-Fi (I do not want to use remote servers - iCloud or Dropbox).

I was very disappointed to discover, after purchasing, that secondary vaults can only be synced using Dropbox. I most probably wouldn't have forked out $AUS95 if I had have had that info. Your sales pitch doesn't refer to this rather large shortcoming at all and it only becomes apparent when you drill down into the user guide after discovering you only get the Dropbox option when trying to sync secondary volts on the iPhone. I'm not saying you are being directly deceptive but reading your material gives the impression that Wi-Fi syncing can be done across all vaults.

I have read comments on some of your discussion forums on this issue and take from your posts that I am correct in saying that at present secondary vaults can't be synced using Wi-Fi?? Also, that future updates may have a solution to address this issue but you can't put time frames on it??

After having said all, my question is - when/if an update does come out to allow Wi-Fi syncing of all vaults, will it be a free update or am I going to have to put my hand in my pocket again? Also, an indication of days, weeks, months or beyond for the update would be nice!!

Thanks for your time and any feed-back you could give in regard to the above would be much appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I don't want my kids iOS devices to be able to access DropBox. I want to be able to sync the secondary vault, and ONLY the secondary vault, that I set up for them over Wi-Fi. Can you tell me if and when that will be available. I just paid $9.99 to get them the Pro upgrade for that feature, but found out it wasn't available. I would buy the Pro upgrade for my second child if this is available. Thank you.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. It sounds like there may be some confusion, so I'll attempt to clarify:

Multiple vaults can be synced over either:
    Dropbox, between any platforms
WiFi sync, between one Mac and one or more iOS devices

WiFi sync of multiple vaults does require 1Password 5 for Mac.

At the moment WiFi sync does require that the primary vault be synced, in addition to giving the option of allowing any secondary vaults to be synced. We do hope to remove the requirement of syncing the primary vault at some point, but I can't make any promises in that regard at this time.

One way you might be able to work around that would be to have an empty primary vault, or have the primary vault contain only items that you want to sync to all devices. Then you'd have secondary vaults for each individual and only sync the primary vault and the individual's vault to their device. This is not a perfect solution though, as the primary vault password will unlock any secondary vaults, including yours (on any devices where that vault is present). Everyone will have to use the primary vault's Master Password to unlock the app.

Sharing of vaults can only be accomplished using Dropbox (or, our new 1Password for Teams product, currently in public beta -- and free during the beta period). iCloud and WiFi do not have the infrastructure required for account-based sharing.

I hope that helps. I wish I had an ideal solution to offer at the moment, but if you cannot/will not use Dropbox sync, at the moment unfortunately that is the best I have.

Thanks Ben, your post goes some of the way to answering my queries...

    In short,
    1. You can't currently sync a secondary vault using Wi-Fi sync - yes?
    2. Does WiFi not having the 'required infrastructure' mean that syncing secondary vaults via WiFi will never able to be done (near future, say 12 months)?
    3. I assume public beta is a testing platform for future updated versions?
    4. Will the '1Password for Teams' currently in public beta solve the issue of backing up secondary vaults via Wi-Fi when it becomes available in the App? Will it be a free upgrade or will it be something I have to pay for? How far off is it?
    5. Should I feel my purchases fall short of expectation can I get a refund?

    Thanks for your time.

    1. You can't currently sync a secondary vault using Wi-Fi sync - yes?

You can, but you also have to sync the Primary vault via WiFi, and it can only be done from 1Password 5 for Mac (e.x. 1Password for Windows cannot do it).

    1. Does WiFi not having the 'required infrastructure' mean that syncing secondary vaults via WiFi will never able to be done (near future, say 12 months)?

I don't see how sharing a vault could ever really be done over WiFi, but as mentioned above syncing already can be, with the caveats mentioned.

    1. I assume public beta is a testing platform for future updated versions?

    Correct.

    1. Will the '1Password for Teams' currently in public beta solve the issue of backing up secondary vaults via Wi-Fi when it becomes available in the App? Will it be a free upgrade or will it be something I have to pay for? How far off is it?

1Password for Teams is an online subscription based service. You can learn more about it here:

    https://support.1password.com/teams-faq/

    If this statement:

(I do not want to use remote servers - iCloud or Dropbox).

Is an absolute, then 1Password for Teams would not meet your requirements -- as 1Password for Teams is the remote server.

    1. Should I feel my purchases fall short of expectation can I get a refund?

If you purchased directly from AgileBits then you'd be eligible for our 30 day money back guarantee: https://agilebits.com/home/money_back_guarantee

If you purchased from Apple, as is the case with the iOS app, then their policies apply. Refunds can be requested here: http://reportaproblem.apple.com
Please note that if Apple issues a refund for an item they will not allow that item to be re-downloaded or re-purchased ever.

Cheers Aleen, I've had a chance to play around with the iOS and OS X Apps for a couple of days now. Sorry to be a pain, but just so it's clear in my head...

    1. Using only WiFi sync, there is no way I can have several vaults on my Mac (Primary, Work and Family) and not have my Work vault synced to other family iOS devices (just mine)?
    2. Along the same line if all vaults are synced to all family iOS devices, there is no way of requiring each iOS device to use the Work vault password if they want to open that particular vault on their iOS (opening the App using the primary password gives access to all vaults)?
    3. If I want to achieve above outcomes I would have to use Dropbox?

Also, can you set up 1Password on the Mac so you need to enter the Work vault password before you can open that particular secondary vault? It seems to me that once you enter the App using the primary password then all vaults are open to whoever entered the App.

    Thanks.

    Hi @Aus,

Let me see if I can clear things up for you.

    1. You cannot use WIFi syncing for sharing vaults. However, you can have multiple iOS devices syncing to a single Mac. You also need to have the Primary vault be one of the vaults synced over WiFI.

For example: Let's say you have a single Mac with 3 vaults on it: Primary, Family and Work. You could sync them all over WiFi to your iPhone. But let's say your spouse also wanted to use WiFi sync on a second iPhone, but only wanted to sync the Primary and Home vaults. If you only set up those two vaults on the second iPhone, you should be able to sync those two over WiFI and not install or sync the Work vault.

    1. Yes, that is correct. Because you need to sync your Primary vaults when using WiFi sync, the only password that you can use to access the vaults on your iOS app is the Primary vault's password. And it will give access to all other vaults set to sync with that device.

    2. Yes, you could do everything that you are wanting to do if you decided to use Dropbox for syncing.

And yes, once you have entered the Master Password for the Primary vault, you can access all of the other vaults on the Mac.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Hello agilebits support team!
Because I run into the same problem (can not sync secondary vault with windows via wifi) I searched for a solution and finally found this post here. Please don't get me wrong, 1Password is great and I use it for my daily business on my iPhone and Macbook which works like a charm. But I have to say this is really sad. I'm not a developer but I can't imagine this function can not be implemented at all for 1Passsword 4 (Windows). If this would be a 99cent app, it would be ok but this software is much more expensive. However, I can work with my Macbook but if I had only a Windows machine I would really be annoyed.
    Just a short feedback :)
    Cheers!

  • We appreciate the feedback, @suitetom. The technical reason that this hasn't come to Windows yet is that 1Password for Windows does not have an underlying database of all of your vaults like iOS and Mac do. Windows only ever accesses a single vault at a time. It doesn't know about any vaults other than the one you have open. Mac and iOS on the other hand have a database of all of your vaults, and the sync files (OPVault or Agile Keychain) are just used for syncing. On Windows the OPVault or Agile Keychain is not just a sync file, it is the only database 1Password for Windows has.

We do hope to improve this in the future but unfortunately I cannot make any promises at this point. It will be a rather large undertaking when / if we choose to take it on.

Hello. I am trying to sync both a primary and a secondary vault via wifi, between a mac and 2 iPods. I have 1Password Pro, and it shows being active. Only the primary vault is syncing. I have succeeded in syncing both vaults to an iPad. What am doing wrong? Thanks!

    Hi @Bronwen224466

I'd like to ask you to create some Diagnostics Reports, one from each of your devices:

Attach the Diagnostics Report(s) to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report(s) in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report(s) in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report(s) and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!
