1Password integration for Mac apps?
Hi!
I would like to integrate 1Password in Paw - The ultimate REST client for Mac. Is there any integration possible for Mac apps, or do you only have integration for 3rd party iOS apps?
Thank you in advance,
Nuno Grilo

Integration with applications isn't currently possible in OS X. It is available in the iOS app, as you note, but then only if the developer of the target app has added some special code to permit direct communication with 1Password.

Thank you @hawkmoth !
But do you know if OS X integration is planned for a future release, what is that something not to be considered?0 -
@Nuno Fernandes According to other posts by AgileBits employees (I am not one), this is under consideration. You certainly aren't the first to ask about it. But the developers don't ever promise that a feature will be implemented and they also don't provide timelines. This is to prevent disappointment if a promised feature turns out not to be possible to bring to the application. I'm not a developer either, but I have the impression that doing this isn't straightforward on OS X. I'm sure someone from AgileBits will be along to offer any other insight there may be.

Hi @Nuno Fernandes,
I'm glad to see that hawkmoth was able to answer your question about Mac OSX app integration. Right now we do have very limited app integration for OSX apps like Alfred. But for the most part, this remains something under consideration.

I found a neat way to integrate with all sorts of apps using a 3rd party app called BetterTouchTool. For example, I setup my VPN software to trigger the betterTouchTool macro when I hit {command} - \ (just like the browser). The macro opens 1Password mini (with {command} - {option} - \ ) and types "vpn" followed by the right arrow, enter for copy, then paste, and enter to submit the password. I've been using it for a day and it's worked great. For any other apps, simply copy the macro to that app and adjust the keyboard typing to search for that app's password.

Hi @Nuno Fernandes,
Thanks for the interest in this. We haven't ruled out a proper way for integration in third party apps, but we've not yet found a way to do it that we're happy with. What we need is a way to have an app request a login, and for us to be able to return it that information (after asking the user to confirm that they want to do this) in a secure manner. XPC is a no-go because that wouldn't work in sandboxed apps without a temporary sandbox exception. Most inter process communication mechanisms are vulnerable to having another process listen in, and we don't want that (for obvious reasons).
Interestingly enough, most of the infrastructure for this is present in OS X's sharing extensions, it's just exposed to us. It would be awesome if an update to OS X made the OS X sharing extensions as powerful as the iOS ones.
Cheers.
Rick
