Mac App Store Bug Comment

This is more of a comment and suggestion than a question. The Mac App store bug of recent days has highlighted a potential glaring hole in my password management that could have bitten me bad.

Due to the Mac App store bug 1Password wouldn't load, as it needed to be authenticated with my Apple ID; but my Apple ID is stored in 1Password oops. No problem, I'll reset the password on my Apple ID; oh, I can't sign into Gmail as the cookie has expired, and guess where my Google password is stored? So, can't get into 1Password on my Mac, can't reset my password on Gmail; I have an Android device with 1Password on it but that's no good as my vault is synced via iCloud.

Now luckily I also have an iPhone, with 1Password, so in reality it's nothing more than a minor convenience. But it has taught me that I should have a backup record of at least the passwords to the most key accounts, securely stored somewhere other than in 1Password.

    Good point!

  • Hey @Mr Clump! I definitely hear you there. My Apple ID account is a password I remember in addition to storing in 1Password, because it's very important. I have an iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro, so if two are gone there's always the third but what if I don't have it with me? So, with that strange scenario in mind, I created an extremely fancy wordlist password for my Apple ID. Since Apple doesn't accept regular wordlist passwords (no capital letters or numbers) I had to add a few things. If you see that situation creeping up, it may be a good idea to create a new password for your Apple ID as well — one that you can remember, and is of course strong.
