Feature request: default to a specific vault, rather than all vaults?
Showing "all vaults" is a nice feature, but I would still like to be able to set 1Password to default to a specific vault (e.g. my primary vault).
The reason is, I use Folders as a substitute for Categories, due to the inability to create custom Categories (in the Mac version I keep Categories minimized and Folders maximized all the time; in the iOS version I usually navigate via the Organize tab, where your folders appear).
The problem is that the "all vaults" feature on iOS makes your folders disappear from the Organize tab!
Before version 6.1 on iOS, my usual way of finding an item was:
- select Organize tab → navigate to the folder representing my pseudo-category → select item
However since version 6.1, I often have to do the following:
- click vault icon → select Primary → select Organize tab → navigate to the folder representing my pseudo-category → select item
I know you can configure a subset of vaults to be included in "all vaults", but that's not quite the same thing as configuring the app to default to a specific vault, while still keeping "all vaults" available for when you need it.
Also while I'm on the subject, why does "Search" only appear in the Categories tab (which I otherwise don't use)? Why isn't there a "Search" facility at the top of the tabs I do use (Favorites and Organize)? Search needs to be available everywhere.

Please add a feature to designate a specific vault as the "default". This IS NOT the same thing as modifying "All Vaults" to include ONLY the one single vault that you really want to be the "default" vault. Over the weekend I learned that "real time" sync across multiple iOS & mac OS devices really occurs ONLY when all involved iOS devices are set to the same actual vault, not just set to "All Vaults" with the involved vault included in "All Vaults". As a result of that specific, deliberate testing and understanding, I have explicitly REMOVED all of my vaults from "All Vaults" across all of my iOS devices (turned them all "Off"), in order to force the specific selection of the vault I wish to be using at any given time. However, since 1Password on iOS always starts with "All Vaults" selected, I am forced to make a vault selection now any time that I start 1Password on my iOS devices, before I can interact with the vault that I want to use as my default vault. If you supported the ability to designate a specific vault as the "default" vault to be selected upon iOS 1Password startup (including the option to have that "default" be "All Vaults"), this would make it much easier. Thank you for your support.

Hello @semblance,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on ways that we can improve our app since adding the All Vaults option. I have submitted your votes for the ability to set a default vault and to add locations with the ability to do searches to our developers.
We truly appreciate customers like you who love us enough to tell us when there are places we can improve our already awesome product.
With thanks!

Hi @egilbert0000,
I've merged your thread with another on the same subject. Thanks for the feedback!

I'd also like to default to a specific vault. If that's not possible, please add an option to disable all vaults.

@RussInGotham: We may add additional options for the new All Vaults feature, but for now you can do this in 1Password Settings > Vaults > All Vaults > Vault for Saving. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Hi @brenty, this doesn't really help. I rarely create items on the phone — I create them on my Mac where it's less fiddly, and let them sync to the phone.
The real issue for me relates to navigation. I often use folders to navigate, and the "All Vaults" view makes your folders disappear. That's the fundamental issue.
In "All Vaults" mode under the "Organise" tab, all that's left are tags. I do use tags, but not for navigation — I use them for other purposes. This means that in "All Vaults" mode, the entire Organise tab has now become completely useless.
Surprisingly, even with "All Vaults" set to only contain one vault in Settings, the "Organise" tab still doesn't display that vault's folders, even though it could. I would actually regard this as a bug, rather than a feature request.
One possible resolution for this would be for the "Organise" tab to simply display all folders for all active vaults. If "All Vaults" is configured to have multiple vaults, then simply break out the folders at the top level by vault name. In other words, render the folders under top-level folders like this:
- Vault 1 folders:
- Vault 2 folders:
- etc...
This would fix the fundamental issue for me, which is losing access to my folders in "All Vaults" mode.
Others may have different issues; for example if you have a "work" vault and a "private" vault, I can imagine wanting to keep them completely separate — and this would require disabling "All Vaults" altogether.
Another resolution might be to make the user's vault selection "sticky", so it persists even after a 1Password restart or device reboot. That way, if I set the vault to "Primary", at least it would stay that way, rather than constantly — and annoyingly — resetting to "All Vaults", as it does today.
The lack of persistence is arguably another bug in the current "All Vaults" implementation.

Thanks for the detailed explanation @semblance. We are definitely looking at improvements for All Vaults to make the feature as useful and convenient as it can be. Hopefully this deal with folders is something we can find a better solution for.

In the Mac version of 1Password, this issue has now been fixed very nicely.
Is the same fix coming to iOS?

Confirmed, this features has appeared in the iOS main (non-beta) version - I'm using 6.3.1. So the issue is now resolved! 8-)
