Auto lock.

Hi. I used my laptop at work, closed the lid (auto sleep), travelled and then opened it. I was surprised to see (when I looked) that a 1P window I had used that morning was still open and visible. I thought it would have auto-locked. I went to 1P preferences, and clicked on security. I've been pretty busy, so was a little tired, so mistakenly took the click off lock-on-sleep (My thinking was back to front - like I said, I was tired). The click disappeared, as expected, but then that whole dialog box became greyed out, except for change Master Password (which I didn't want to do). I clicked away, new window and back etc. Nothing made it active. I then quit 1P and brought it back, and all could be selected as normal.
But you need to be aware of the window of time in which I could see things, do things, then bizarrely couldn't do things.
I've attached the picture to show you.

    Hi @Narius,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us about this, and for the details & screenshot - it really helps us when we can see exactly what you saw! :)

In your screenshot, it looks as if 1Password is locked, as many of the settings in the Preferences window will be greyed out and unavailable until you unlock it. For example, if you open the main 1Password app now and lock it, then go to Preferences > Security, it will look exactly like it does in your screenshot (unless you've changed any of those settings since taking the screenshot, of course). If you were to unlock 1Password with your master password and switch back to the Preferences, those settings would be available again.

Now, if I understand what you're saying, the problem that happened was that your Mac went to sleep (when you closed the lid) but 1Password did not lock itself, so it was still unlocked when you woke it up again. Was the "Lock on sleep" setting enabled or disabled when that happened? You mentioned you turned that setting off, but I'm not sure if you did that before or after you noticed 1Password hadn't locked itself. Also, how long was your MacBook closed? Was it definitely in sleep mode during that time?

...a 1P window I had used that morning was still open and visible.

Was that the main 1Password app window? Or possibly a window you had anchored from 1Password mini? Or something else?

    Thanks! :)

Maybe a bit more detail will help. I last recall using 1P when at home on Mon morning. I closed the laptop, took it with me to work, did numerous activities on my laptop throughout the day, closed it again, came home, saw the 1P window I was on that morning. Thought "this is weird", went to prefs knowing I should be able to have it lock after a certain amount of time, took the tick off lock on sleep (thinking I was activating it - you know, tiredness etc), screen goes grey, I realise I'm an idiot for my tired/backward thinking, take a screenshot knowing I'll probably email you at some point, click on backup, sync, etc close prefs, open prefs, still grey. Quit 1P. Reopen. All is happy. Click on (i.e. activate) lock on sleep. Try to get on with other work. Decide to procrastinate by quickly writing to you.
In answer to your length of time questions, my travel time to and from work is approx 1 hr on transport each way. I didn't observe an unusual power drain to cause me to think that the laptop hadn't gone to sleep.
    Hope all that helps.

I think it was the main window. (Not sure about anchoring, so don't think I did it)

    Hi @Narius,

Thanks for clarifying that! The behavior you described is definitely strange - not just with 1Password not locking itself during sleep mode, but also the fact that it seemed to lock itself immediately when you un-checked the "Lock on sleep" setting.

Have you been able to reproduce the same problem since that happened? In other words, if you open the main 1Password app and unlock it, then close your laptop for a few moments, and finally open it again, is 1Password locked, or does it still remain unlocked? Do the other auto-lock settings work as expected? (For example, does 1Password lock itself when the screensaver is activated, or when your Mac is idle for 5 minutes?)

No - haven't been able to reproduce it. But then I haven't been trying either. I'll let you know if it comes up again, but in the meantime, I thought you should know it definitely happened, and took the screenshot to verify myself.

  • Sounds good @Narius! If it does happen again, you know where to find us. :glasses:
