Possibly a tiny bug, just for the record

I downloaded 1P to my private Mac that did not have it from before, but after upgrading to OS X 10.11.1 it stopped syncing with iCloud right until I created a new item on this machine. That seems to have been the necessary awakening. So if anyone experience trouble retrieving icloud items, try create one item and sync it...

    Hi @aarild,

I'm sorry to hear that you had a bit of trouble getting 1Password set up on a new Mac! Thanks for sharing what helped get it working again.

If you're willing to tell us a bit more about this experience, we'd love to make sure that there isn't a bug in 1Password that we need to fix. (Or, if there is a bug, that we can track it down and make it go away!)

    • How did you set up 1Password on this new Mac: Did 1Password automatically detect your data in iCloud or did you have to select the 'existing user' option and point it at your iCloud data?
    • Once 1Password was set up on the Mac, how did you determine that sync wasn't working: Was there an error message or did Preferences > Sync indicate that no sync was happening?
    • How many other devices are in your 1Password setup? Were there new items on those devices that were not syncing to this 'new' device?

The more detail you can provide, the more quickly we'll be able to figure out where things might be getting tangled up!

    Hi,
    1. Everything went fine setting up 1P with the Mac, and it went straight to iCloud sync with no issues. At a point I upgraded to 10.11.1, and probably had it running for a couple of weeks but I did not create any entries.

    1. No messages occurred at any point, but last week as I knew I had made quite a few entries on my iPhone I realised these did not sync to the Mac. Still no error messages, they just did not show on the Mac. After a few restarts of both app and OS I created one new entry on the Mac, and it immediately started to sync AND downloaded what I had created on the phone that I had missed.

    2. These are the only two units that sync this database, my previous work Mac and iPad do not sync anymore.

    Hi @aarild,

It's hard to say just yet but at any point did you restart 1Password for Mac or reboot the Mac at all or was the first troubleshooting step you tried to create a test item on the Mac?

iCloud uses push notification so what should happen is 1Password registers for notifications to the 1Password data held by the CloudKit framework. If for any reason that isn't working then the primary update mechanism isn't correctly notifying 1Password. Creating a new item would force 1Password to sync because of course it now needs to update the cloud service with it's new information.

If you create new test items in 1Password for iOS are they showing after a reasonably short period of time on the Mac? if they are it would suggest that whatever glitch happened was indeed temporary. This is just to make sure things are still working smoothly.

Hi, as I wrote above I did indeed only create the item "after a few restarts of both app and OS". And, also as described above, the issue has not reproduced since the creation of this item. If you wish to try and reproduce it that would of course imply a downgraded OS X and, possibly a downgraded app version (writing this I have no access to Mac version history, but 1P for iOS did have a big update prior to this incident). I have nothing further to add, I suggest you only keep this in mind around the next big OS upgrade perhaps but that's of course entirely up to you.

    Hi @aarild,

Thank you for the additional information! Do you happen to have multiple vaults in 1Password? If so, I think you might have experienced an issue we recently discovered, which is related to the new All Vaults view in 1Password 6 for iOS - and if so, I apologize for the inconvenience! If it happens again, please open 1Password on your iPhone and go to the Categories section, tap the vault icon in the upper left corner, and pick the vault containing the changes that aren't syncing to your Mac. That should correctly trigger a sync, and then it will hopefully sync to 1Password on your Mac.

If you're not using multiple vaults (or if you're not using 1Password 6 for iOS), then hopefully this was an odd, one-time problem. But if it starts happening again, please let us know and we'll be happy to help you out with that! :)
