Hi @steviebee,
I've split your comment into its own thread (and moved it to the iOS forums) since your solution will be different than the previous poster's.
The place to start is this article in our Knowledgebase. It will walk you through the process of moving your data from 1Password 3 to 1Password 6. Please let me know if these instructions help. If you hit any snags, please let us know where things stopped working, and we'll start from there.

thanks Megan - all done and works great!....so now how do I get this on my iMac running 10.8.5 (or do I require at least 10.10?)

Hi @steviebee ,
1Password 4.4.3 will run within OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). Here's a link to the Knowledgebase article "What are my options if I can’t run the latest version of 1Password?" where you'll find additional information and a link to the Legacy downloads section of AgileBits main site.

Thanks for the assist, @JWeaver. :)
@Steviebee, as JWeaver mentioned it is possible to run a legacy version of 1Password on OS X 10.8.5. To take advantage of the latest version you'd need to upgrade to OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).
Once you have 1Password for Mac installed you can set up syncing:
https://support.1password.com/guides/ios/syncing.html
Please note if you wish to use iCloud syncing you must use 1Password 5 for Mac purchased from the Mac App Store. Purchases from our online store cannot sync with iCloud.
