Upgrade instructions from 1PW3 out of date.

Your instructions for upgrading from 1PW3 for iOS state that you must be on iOS 8 or later. That is incorrect. You must be on iOS 9 because there 1PW6 app is the only one available and requires 9.

Beginning to think that finally taking the plunge to upgrade from 3 was a mistake. I'm not really ready to do iOS9 yet, especially on my iPad2.

1Password Version: 3.7.2
Extension Version: 4.4.4
OS Version: OS X 10.9
Sync Type: Folder+Wifi

  • Hi @madfordmac,

    Thanks for taking the time to write in. The instructions are accurate. Some folks have 1Password 5 running on iOS 8 still, and the same instructions will work for them.

    For what it is worth, iOS 9 has been great for me, especially on my iPad. The multitasking features are great.

    @bwoodruff ,
    Maybe technically true, but very misleading. If you've been simultaneously running 3 and 5 on a device, is moving data between them really an upgrade? I was doing a bunch of reading on your support site before purchasing new versions to figure out if I had everything I needed. To the uninformed reader, that page says in the space of a screen that I can upgrade from 3 to 6 on iOS 8.

  • I'm sorry for any confusion caused, @madfordmac, but I have to respectfully disagree on your point that it is very misleading. In the beginning of the guide we state:

    If you’d like to move from 1Password 3 to 1Password 5 or 6, follow this guide to learn how to migrate your data.

    Going from 1Password 3 to 1Password 5 is, of course, an upgrade. Just as going from 1Password 3 to 1Password 6 is. Nowhere in the text do I see any indication that 1Password 6 for iOS will run on iOS 8. If you have any suggestions on specific wording that you feel is misleading, or mistakenly presents this point, please let me know and I'll be happy to pass that feedback along to our documentation team for their review.

    @bwoodruff ,
    The problem is you're missing a prerequisite, not telling me everything I have to already have to complete the instructions.
    I knew that my upgrade was going to be a little complicated, so I was reading to make sure I could have a successful upgrade before I paid for anything. (I was expecting to pay for the iOS app like I did for v3.) I came across this article and took away two points: 1) I can migrate my data from v3 all the way to v6, and 2) I can upgrade on iOS 8.
    After getting my desktops upgraded to a mix of v4 and v5, I turned to my iOS devices and opened the app store for the first time to find that I couldn't install the app. At this point your have now lied to me. I cannot upgrade on iOS 8.
    If I were to suggest a specific update, it would probably be to the red warning box near the top of that article. Updates in bold.

    These steps require iOS 8.0 or later with 1Password 3 and 1Password 5 (no longer available) or iOS 9.0 or later with 1Password 3 installed on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

    I love that you make 1Password very usable for people stuck with older desktop OSes versions. I was expecting the same experience with iOS and you don't deliver.

  • At this point your have now lied to me.

    I think that is a pretty strong accusation for what is happening here. I don't disagree some clarification could be made. We are working on revamping this entire process, and so hopefully that'll be a moot point when that happens.

    I was expecting the same with iOS

    The App Store doesn't allow older versions of apps to have be downloaded unless two conditions are met:

    1) The older version had been "purchased" (or downloaded for free, in the case of free apps) prior to the release of a newer version
    2) The device is not capable of running the latest version

    This is an App Store restriction, not an AgileBits restriction.

    That said, some customers have reported finding a workaround. I cannot guarantee this will work, I only mention it as some other customers have reported that it has for them:

    1) Open iTunes on your computer, sign in with the Apple ID you use on your iOS device, and download 1Password
    2) Open the App Store on your iOS device and navigate to the Purchases tab (on iPhone this is located under Updates)
    3) Scroll through the list (do not search! Search will not work) and locate 1Password. Click the cloud download button next to 1Password to install the latest compatible version.

    The wording you've proposed is not necessarily accurate either. 1Password 5 for iOS is still available to those who had "purchased" (downloaded) it if their devices cannot run 1Password 6.

    I hope that helps!

    Ben
