How to remove multiple, conflicting copies
Hi. On the topic of "How to remove multiple, conflicting copies...", the problem is that I have a clone of my hard drive on an external drive. 1Password is reading the clone and then giving me this error message. In this case, the cloning software Carbon Copy Cloner cloned the internal drive first thing this morning before I installed the update. Is there a way to exclude the external drive from its search for duplicates? Thanks - Ken Cohen

@kjclaw this knowledge base article covers the situation:
How to remove multiple, conflicting copies of 1Password from your system
Note the last section about backup drives. The solution (if you wish to have the backup drive permanently connected) is to:
- delete any copy of the 1Password app file (only) from the backup drive; and
- exclude the 1Password app file from any further backups (because, of course, you can always re-download it if you need to).
Provided you don't use any app cleaner tool when deleting the app file none of this will interfere with your 1Password data.
Edit: I have deleted your duplicate post.

Hi @kjclaw,
Thanks for contacting us about that! If the copy of the 1Password app on your backup drive was not previously causing any problems, one option is to leave it alone, and it's possible you still won't have any trouble opening the main 1Password app on your Mac. But if you'd like to make sure you avoid potential problems, Stephen's suggestion is the best way to do so.
I hope that helps, but we're here for you if you have more questions! :)

I have this same trouble, except it is still finding a duplicate copy somewhere that I can't locate. I'd like to request a feature request that AgileBits add the ability to update the app without us having to do these extra steps of manually locating, excluding or deleting other copies. I love the 1Password app, and a painless update process would make it perfect. Thanks!

Hi @steve4640,
The alert popup should tell you the filepath of the duplicate copies it has found, like so:
If for some reason that still doesn't help you locate it, try searching your Mac for "1Password" with a Spotlight search: click the little magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of your screen and type in 1Password. Or you can email us a Diagnostics Report and we can tell you where to find it.However, this warning is only informational, and removing the extra copies is a suggestion. As you can see, there's a "Continue update" button that you can press to disregard the suggestion and continue with the update anyway. Having multiple copies installed won't prevent the app from updating. But we added that warning because having multiple copies can cause problems for 1Password, and there is pretty much no reason you'd need more than one copy of the app installed.
I hope this helps clarify the situation. Do let us know if you have any other questions we can help you with! Cheers. :)
