I can't figure out how to get the passwords transferred to android

I have the windows version with passwords set up on it. I want to send the passwords to Android. I don't care how. The info about how to send passwords is wrong, and nothing works. At all. Very frustrating. I really need to know what a "vault" is. It is not backup and it is not a pif file, and it is not even the entire "agilebits" folder. What is it and how do I get it? I once got the passwords sent to iPad somehow with help. I still can't figure it out. I'd like to have a simple way to sync passwords as I change them, but there is no "sync" function anywhere, except where it's grayed out. So at least if I can get the passwords sent in any way at all, I would agree to that. But I will not be using this much longer. The information is wrong, and it's just plain too frustrating to sync or whatever gets the passwords onto another device. It was just as bad last time.

They don't make it easy when you switch phones. I'm in the same position needing to know how to sync my android phone to my old iphone/ios vault. They say to do it wirelessly, but don't really explain how.

  • Hi @Ravenhurst. I'll be happy to help you get everything syncing between your devices.

First things first, a vault is the folder that contains all of your 1Password data. When you enter your Master Password into 1Password, you're unlocking your vault. A backup is a backup of your vault that is made automatically so that you can restore in case of emergency. A 1PIF is an exported file containing your vault data.

A vault can be in either .agilekeychain or .opvault format. 1Password on Android uses the Agile Keychain format for Dropbox and local storage sync. We don’t support the OPVault format for these sync methods yet, but this is something that we are planning on revisiting.

Wi-Fi sync uses an internal version of the OPVault format. If you have an OPVault vault on Windows and wish to avoid using Agile Keychain right now, you can switch over to Wi-Fi sync on your Android device and switch to OPVault format on other platforms.

That said, I'd like to get an idea of your current 1Password setup. Can you create some Diagnostics Reports from your Android device and your PC:

    ---Android---
    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/android.html

    ---Windows---
    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/win.html

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+android@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

I've sent the Windows Diagnostic Report. For Android, I need to know what I should do first. I previously got as far as "Sync Existing Vault", which provides three selections, none of which work. I guess because it's not set up yet. I want to get the passwords from the Windows version of 1Password. I'm stuck at that first selection. Do I "Create new vault"? That doesn't seem right. Do I "Sync existing vault?" That seems to be what I need to do, and I'm stuck, since the "vault" was not found in Dropbox nor local storage after I placed several likely things there, and "Wi-fi" sync didn't work (but I expected that since I don't see a "Wi-fi Sync" selection in the Windows version). I'm not yet at a place where I can access Android Diagnostics.

But I think there's more work to do with Windows version first. The info here is a problem: https://help.agilebits.com/1Password_Windows/setting-up-Dropbox-sync.html
Everything's good up to step 5, "On the General tab, click the Move to Dropbox button. That button is not selectable. I'm guessing that if I "moved to Dropbox", the Android would sync just fine. Maybe the Diagnostics will hold the clue.

Can I just set it up to do a local sync? I THINK the FAQ says that Windows can sync with Android. If not, it sure can be interpreted that way, although the info on that page is only about Apple IOS. https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/sync-wi-fi.html

Once I start through that IOS tutorial, it becomes clear that the Windows version has very different steps. But if I can do "local sync" via wi-fi, that would be fine.

    This link https://support.1password.com/guides/android/wifi.html
...leads me to this link: https://support.1password.com/guides/windows/sync-wifi.html
... which tells me to select "File > Wi-Fi Sync". There is no such thing.

Also, the link https://support.1password.com/guides/android/wifi.html screen shots are wrong.

This link https://support.1password.com/guides/android/wifi.html refers to "Settings > Sync" which doesn't seem to apply to any device. Maybe IOS? It's tough to tell when the tutorial is about a Windows PC, and when it's about IOS.

  • Thanks for the update, @Ravenhurst. I've located your diagnostics report, and I'll take a look. We can continue this conversation over email. Thanks!

    peri,

I think I got it working!

I manually copied the "agilekeychain" file/folder (and also the entire 1password data folder, just in case) to Dropbox, and the Android was able to Sync just fine! I had already tried both folder ideas before I wrote to you, but I guess I missed something before. I think it's OK now. I've moved my passwords just as I had done once with my iPad.

    Thanks!

FYI, I'm running Windows 10, and the "Move To Dropbox" button is grayed-out. A similar issue is in the Forum, but that post says the button is available, just doesn't work:
    https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/57322/move-to-dropbox-windows-10#latest

I moved my "agilekeychain" manually into Dropbox, so I could get the passwords onto Android. I don't know if the non-responsive button means that other things will also not work (will the PC sync when it doesn't know the "vault" was moved?). I have no idea. But it may come up sometime. For my situation, all I needed was the passwords for now. I can figure out sync issues later.

  • Hi @Ravenhurst. I'm glad that you were able to get your vault into Dropbox! :)

I've just emailed you about ten minutes ago. After looking over the diagnostics report, it looks like the Dropbox app is not running on your PC, This means that even though you were able to manually copy the vault into Dropbox, any changes won't actually sync. You'll need the app installed and running on your PC for all changes to upload to Dropbox.

You've also got the older version of 1Password for Windows installed, but your license will work for the latest version (1Password 4). Please have a look at the email I sent and follow those instructions for installing Dropbox and upgrading 1Password. That should get everything running smoothly!

I've received the instructions and will update Dropbox and 1Password. Thank you!

Before I started this thread, since I saw references to "Version 4", I first made sure I did not have an out-dated version of 1Password. "Help > Check for new version" specifically states "You are running the latest version of 1Password"! Version 1.0.9.342. Which it turns out, is not the "latest version".

  • Great! To clarify, Help > Check for new version checks for point updates (like from 1.0.9.341 to 1.0.9.342), not major upgrades. 1.0.9.342 is the latest version of 1Password for Windows that was developed before we released 1Password 4, which is why no new versions showed up here. Major upgrades require manual upgrading.

Hope that clarifies things! Shoot me an email back if you have any trouble with upgrading. Thanks!
