Changing the default name when saving a login
Is there a way to modify the default name chosen for a login when saving it in the browser? Currently 1Password uses the title of the web page. I find this is not always very helpful or useful and would much prefer to e.g. use the domain name instead.
Possible feature request: Be able to construct a default name e.g. using "%d - %t" where %d = domain and %t = title. This way users could decide themselves what the default behavior is.

@EarthAura Sorry to hear you're unhappy with the way 1Password creates its titles. Can you let us know what version of 1Password and the browser extension you're using?
Your idea to allow a format string is interesting, but I'm curious what titles are being generated for you and how that's not working for you. Could you give us an example from a recent site you saw this on? If you're not comfortable sharing it here, you can email us at support@agilebits.com with your forum username and a link to this thread so we can keep things connected up.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply @jxpx777 ! Your question forced me to actually try and find a problem case and it seems that 1Password actually does use part of the domain name for saving a login (agilebits.com becomes Agilebits, without the .com). My initial assumption was therefore incorrect and in combination with my frustration about 1Password not showing the username when selecting a login, as can be seen here, led me to jump to the conclusion that 1Password just uses the current page title, sorry about that!
Now the only real problem case I can think of is domains that are otherwise equal but have a different ending (e.g. .com, .net) but that's a corner case. Guess I'll just have to get used to this new way of naming my logins, heh.
On a side note: It would be super useful to see the username beside the login name when viewing / searching for logins. Taking my screenshot as an example, Amazon would become Amazon (my@email.com).

Hi @EarthAura,
We do have a feature request to see usernames displayed in 1Password mini, especially now with the All Vaults view. I've added your thoughts to the request and I will remind the developers in the Mac team that this is rising in importance due to All Vaults. Jamie is mulling over some stuff about creating more friendly names but I believe that whatever he decides he still wants it to be based primarily on the domain name given that is one of the best ways of distinguishing sites.

Perhaps I'm thinking of something else, but when 1Password pops up to offer to save a new login and suggests the URL as the title for the new record, I just edit that suggestion right there in the popup before saving it.

@sbarnea Are you by chance using 1Password for Windows beta? We had a bit of a miscommunication about a new feature in the form filling library that does try to ferret out a nice reasonable title from the page's title based on the domain name. I certainly wouldn't want those full page titles being used in my 1Password data either.
For instance, "signin.ebay.com" + "Sign in or Register | eBay" (the page's title attribute) should simply yield "eBay" for the title. The miscommunication led to the full title of the page being used, so I suspect that might be your situation, and we have an issue open to fix this as soon as possible. Am I on the right track?

@sbarnea I totally understand what you're going through, I felt much the same being a LP convert myself. However, since I created this discussion I've gone through a painful migration period of changing passwords, editing fields and confirming the existence of all the logins in my vault. Whilst doing this I decided to drink the 1Password cool aid and update all titles to match what 1P would suggest (except in certain cases where different casing or spacing better matches the real name). I used to think I wanted everything as domain names, but I came to realize I much prefer human readable titles :chuffed:. The human readable titles make especially much sense when adding multiple websites to a login.

Thanks for that perspective, @EarthAura. Everyone comes at this stuff from different prior experiences, so that's part of the joy and fun of working on it, learning from other people and understanding their needs and desires, and sometimes sharing with them another approach or philosophy that might work as well or better. :chuffed:
