I don't understand the idea of dropbox synchronization.

I want to use 1P on my Mac, as well as my iphone and ipad. Is there a way to use the same 'vault' for all these or do I need a separate vault for Mac and iOS? Or is that what the dropbox function accomplishes? I am new to this type of program, and am trying to decide how to proceed and which to purchase. Thanks!

1Password Version: 6
Extension Version: Not Provided

@stevew7 in order to sync your 1Password data between devices you don't have to create a separate vault within 1Password—although you can do so if you wish.

Just to be quite clear, though, 1P for Mac and 1P for iOS are completely separate products.

1Password is licensed per person and per platform, rather than per device. You can read more about AgileBits' approach to software licensing in this knowledge base article.

You can buy 1P for Mac either from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits store. However, if you have owned an earlier version of 1P for Mac you may be entitled to an upgrade discount if you buy from the AgileBits store. That discount won't be available if you buy from the Mac App Store.

1P for iOS is a free download from the App Store accessed from your iOS device—with an in-app purchase to enable pro features. If you make that in-app purchase on one iOS device you can enable the pro features without charge on any other iOS device that uses the same Apple ID.

The best places to get started understanding 1Password sync options are these excerpts from the user guides:

    Syncing (iOS)

You may also find it helpful to look at this excerpt from the Mac user guide:

    Hi @stevew7,

My friend @Stephen_C has given you a very good option on how to deal with having 1Password in multiple devices, but I'd like to let you know about my personal favourite: 1Password for Families. It's a single subscription, and you always have the most recent version of the app in all of your devices and platforms for free. In addition to that, you would be able to use it with your family and share information with them if you want, but it's still a very good option even if it's just for you! With Families you don't have to worry about synching either, it will keep everything in all your devices synced automatically. AgileBits has a very nice plan for early adopters right now, you can read more about 1 Password for families and sign in here: https://blog.agilebits.com/2016/02/16/introducing-1password-for-families/

I hope this information helps you! :chuffed:

    Hi Stephen and Pilar,

Thanks so much to you both for responding. You answered questions I didn't even know to ask! I'm leaning toward the wifi sync, and using the 1Password for Families option. Being a monthly charge it will cost more in the long run but from the little I know still, seems to be a better option to integrate all our devices. I wasn't yet aware of that option. Thanks again, and thanks for linking to the various articles.

    Steve

  • @stevew7 So glad to hear that! :) And actually, it doesn't cost as much as an annual upgrade in the long run since you get all the 1Password apps, not just Mac or iOS or both. You can use a Android and Windows device as well. The subscription just makes it easy for us to keep you up to date without worrying about upgrade prices and stuff. And there's not really any downside to it as far as your data goes — if you stop paying, you can still read your data, you just can't add or edit anything.

Hi there, penderworth, have been travelling and didn't see your response. (BTW, a relative we visited has 1Password and thinks it's fantastic...and he's not one to praise products without great reason to.) I've swayed back a bit toward buying. Do you, Pilar, Stephen or others know what the annual or other upgrade prices typically run? Thanks again.

    Hi @stevew7,

I'm glad to hear that you are leaning towards 1Password. After a few days with it, you'll probably be wondering how you ever survived without it (I know I do!).

I don't know with certainty about how AgileBits will handle this in the future, but we can get a good idea of what's happened in the past. For the Mac version of 1Password, the upgrade from 1Password 3 to 4 was paid. Keep in mind that we're on 1Password 6, and both 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 have been free upgrades. Anyone who wants to upgrade from 3 gets a big discount, I think 50%. If you had purchased 1Password in 2015 (or even 2014!) you would be using the latest 1Password without any additional cost. I hope this clears things up for your! :chuffed:

@stevew7: While I personally have used Dropbox for years, I'll be the first to admit that it can be less than intuitive...and tedious to setup at times. So while I won't give it up completely, I (and my family) have found 1Password Families to be a breath of fresh air.

You may be interested to know that we do offer an annual plan which gets you 20% off — effectively two months free. We hadn't yet announced that billing option back in February, so I wanted to mention that to make sure you were aware.

While I'm always hesitant to pay a subscription myself, up to 5 family members (+2 with the early adopter bonus, including extra storage) having access to all of the apps and none of us having to fiddle with sync settings makes it more than worth it for me (and I think a lot of other people) — especially compared to buying individual licenses. Cheers! :)
