My 1Password app disappeared from my iPhone 6. So I reloaded the app from the App store. Upon opening it I can't log in but am greeted with the Welcome to 1 Password screen. I chose Sync with existing vault and Sync with iCloud, it says existing data not found. I have only used 1Password on my iPhone. I looked on iTunes with my phone plugged in and there is no backup folder listed under the 1Password app. On my iPhone 1 Password is turned on under iCloud Drive. Help!.
I have version 6.2.2 1 password app and iOS 9.2.1 version. I was previously syncing with iCloud.

1Password Version: 6.2.2 1

  • Hi @t3hansen,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. I'm really sorry to hear about the trouble here. When you say you were previously syncing with iCloud... do you mean you had explicitly set up iCloud sync in 1Password?

By default 1Password only stores your data on the device you create it on (with the exception of 1Password for Teams & 1Password for Families). Even if iCloud syncing is enabled on the device and for other apps, it needs to be enabled specifically for 1Password. Additionally, 1Password does not utilize iCloud Drive (directly). iCloud Drive must be enabled, in order for 1Password to sync with iCloud, but that is because enabling iCloud Drive also enables the CloudKit APIs that we do use. 1Password data is not visible in iCloud Drive when iCloud sync is configured properly:

Sync with iCloud | 1Password for iOS

Can you think of anything that changed between the last time you had 1Password and when you noticed it was missing? Was an iOS update installed, for example?

    Please let us know.

    Ben

Yes I had set up iCloud sync in 1Password.

Not sure what you mean by: 1Password data is not visible in iCloud Drive when iCloud sync is configured properly.
Does the 1Password data get synced and saved in iCloud or not? Would it not still be there to sync with? If I got 1Password for Mac would it be possible to find the data in iCloud and sync with it?

1Password was missing just in the last couple of days and nothing happened in that timeframe. I had just used it a few days ago and it was working.

The only thing I can think of is a few weeks ago I had to reinstall iOS 9.2..1 software because I was having issues with the screen locking up. Don't know if that would effect the syncing with iCloud. Would the previous set up to iCloud sync in 1Password be changed? Would that cause it to erase the data stored in iCloud?

    Thanks for your assistance

@t3hansen: Yes, but not iCloud Drive. Apps use CloudKit to sync data, which does not show up in the filesystem in iCloud Drive.

Did you setup iCloud Sync in 1Password previously? I think that's what Ben was getting at. If you didn't that would explain why there is no data there now.

For example, if you had been backing up your iPhone to iCloud, this is not the same as syncing. Then, when you reinstalled iOS, everything on the device was deleted, including 1Password. If you backed up to iCloud first and restored from it after, your 1Password data should have been restored along with the app, but unfortunately that is not always the case (which is why we include the backup/restore feature in 1Password itself).

Otherwise, the only reasons you would no longer have 1Password data in iCloud would be:

    • You were using an old version of iOS (pre-8) previously to sync
    • You deleted 1Password's iCloud data through iCloud storage settings
    • You deleted 1Password's iCloud data through 1Password's settings

If you were syncing 1Password with iCloud before, which device(s) were you syncing with? That may be the simplest way to get your data back. Please let me know!
