Constant crashing with 1Password Mini

Why am I getting so many delays and crashes when I use 1Password Mini to save logins? I'm running all the latest apps, the latest Mac OS, and the latest 1Password. But I'm still constantly getting spinning wheels and slow responses if not crashes.

1Password Version: 6
Extension Version: ? crashed - latest
OS Version: 10.11.3
Sync Type: iCloud

    Hi @robbiewex,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with delays & crashes in 1Password!

You said you're using version 6, but not the exact version number (you can find that in the main app by going to 1Password > About 1Password). We released an update for version 6.1 earlier this week, and if you haven't already installed that, it might help to solve this for you. If you're using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password, just go to the menu for 1Password > Check for Updates, and follow the steps to install 6.1. (If you're using the Mac App Store version, the 6.1 update has been submitted to Apple and is waiting for approval there).

Does the 6.1 update help? Please let us know how it goes, and if it's still a problem, we'll continue from there. Thanks!

Hi and thanks for your response. I am running 6.1 and it tells me it is the latest version. I crashed again this morning. Here's how. I was logging into this site so I could comment, 1Password popped up, I thought it was asking for this site's password when it actually was asking me to login to 1Password so I entered the wrong password. That seems when the 1Password Mini always gets hung up, as I believe this happened to me yesterday after I entered an incorrect login password - the Mini app just hangs, I get a spinning wheel and it doesn't recover. Then I can only kill the app by using the Activity Monitor.

Thanks @robbiewex! The extra information is helpful, and this sounds like an issue I believe our developers have been investigating. If you don't mind, can you let us know a few more details:

    • Does the same problem happen if you click the 1Password extension / 1Password mini icon and try to unlock it with an incorrect password? Or is it specific to when 1Password prompts you to save a Login (as in your screenshot from yesterday)?
    • Does the same problem happen if you try to unlock the main 1Password app with an incorrect password?
    • When the problem happens in 1Password mini, are you able to open & use the main 1Password app?
    • If the main app still works, try going to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart 1Password mini. Does that help at all?
    • Can you reproduce the problem after rebooting your Mac?
    • If you disable iCloud sync (in 1Password > Preferences > Sync, change iCloud to None), then lock 1Password, are you able to reproduce the problem in mini? (You can re-enable iCloud sync after testing that.)
    • Does the same problem happen if you leave the master password field empty and click Unlock?

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Hi Drew, so in response:

    • Problem does not occur if you go to the Mini app and incorrectly enter your password, it's only when it prompts you when you are logging into a site; I keep missing that it is asking me to login to 1Password instead of typing in a name for the site, so I enter an incorrect login password for 1Password and then my system sort-of hangs and the Mini app crashes
    • It does not happen on the main 1Password app, it's just with the pop-up dialog that appears after logging into a site where it wants to save a password
    • I'll have to again see what happens with the main 1Password app while Mini is crashed; not certain
    • I will use your restart suggestion and see if it can recover
    • I rebooted today so I'll have to see the next time this occurs again
    • Let me spend more time today and I'll let you know what I see
      Again Thanks!

More now -- I just tried some of what you suggested to see when Mini crashes. Here's what else I just learned on this...

    • If I tell Mini to Lock and then login to a site with a name/password, the Save Login window comes up asking for a Master Password. If I just click Unlock without entering anything, it crashes the Mini app. After, if I try to open the 1Password application, it does not come up and eventually I get the message contained in the screenshot attached...
    • then, both actually close and I don't need to force-quit the Mini app in Activity Monitor, but then 1Password has essentially restarted. It's not something I want to have to do.
    • Going to try turning off the sync to iCloud now

Ah hah! It is the sync to iCloud that's causing this issue for some reason. If I set Sync to none in the Prefs of 1Password, now Mini works correctly and shakes left-right if I enter an incorrect password.

Any idea how I fix this iCloud issue? I know my laptop is properly logged into iCloud.

Yep, confirmed. Restarted 1password and re-enabled iCloud Sync after checking that my laptop was properly configured with iCloud. Then did the same thing where I first select Lock under the Mini app's pulldown menu Prefs, then logged into a site with a name/pwd and when it asked for the 1Password master password, I clicked unlock without entering anything and it is hung.

Final entry -- seems it's something about Syncing to iCloud. I have it setup to Sync to Dropbox now and it works much better. Would like the iCloud syncing but for now this is OK. I did reset my iCloud vault but that did not solve the issue. What other troubleshooting measures for iCloud can I use. You can refer me to documentation if that's where I should look. Thanks again for any feedback you can provide!

    Hi @robbiewex,

Thank you for the information & details about all that! It definitely helps us narrow down the cause of the problem.

So, this is (obviously) related to iCloud sync, and I've previously seen reports of a brief delay when trying to unlock mini with the wrong password (or no password at all). To make a long story short, a brief delay is normal in that situation because we need to fetch some iCloud data in order to test an incorrect master password, in case you had changed that password from a different device. (The delay doesn't happen with Dropbox sync enabled, because the Dropbox data we need to check is stored locally on the computer.)

However, a "normal" delay is roughly a second or so. In your case, it sounds like that delay is way too long! I spoke to one of our developers about this, and he thinks it's possible we're doing something wrong in 1Password. To help us figure out what's going on, I'd like to ask you to send us a 'sample' of 1Password mini while it's in the "Not Responding" state, and also a Diagnostics Report from your Mac:

    • To get the sample, you'll need to switch back to iCloud sync and reproduce the problem. When mini gets stuck, double-click the 1Password mini process in Activity Monitor, then click the Sample button. Save that as a text file.

    • To create the diagnostics report from your Mac, follow the steps here:

    Sending Diagnostics Reports (Mac)

Attach the sample and diagnostics report to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post the sample or report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your email in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report(s) and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the sample & report, we should hopefully be able to figure out why this is causing such a long delay for you. Thanks in advance! :)
