I own 1Password 4; can't run 1Password 5 on my new MacBook.
I own/use 1P4 on my iMac (running Mavericks). 1P5 is installed on my new MacBook but it doesn't work. I get "Trial Expired" when I try to use 1P5. When I click on "Add License" I get a Finder window indicating I should select some mysterious file name and click "open". The only other choice is "Buy 1Password" and I shouldn't have to buy it again. I have my license number, but I see no place to enter it. I'm the only user on these 2 machines. Thanks.

As you mention a licence number, this seems like a well-known issue.
1PW3 used a licence KEY, 1PW4 and later use a licence FILE.
The upgrade from 3 to 4 was a paid one, but due to a bug some people were able to use 1PW4 without paying, So it seems that you need to purchase an upgrade, there is an option on the purchase page.
The upgrade from 1PW4 to 1PW5 and 1PW5 to 1PW6 are free, and the same licence file is used for all those versions. You do only need one licence for both your Macs.
As you are on OS 10.11.3, I would recommend that you move to 1PW6 once you have a paid upgrade.
