Is it possible for another app to read 1Password-data in the background?

Hello,

can another app (for example navigation app) in the background (multitasting) read data from my 1Password safe?

Thanks,
K

  • Hi @Klixx,

Thanks for taking the time to write in.

No, other apps cannot read your data inside 1Password. All they may be able to read is any data you put onto the clipboard, but that would be without any context (e.x. if you copy your Amazon password to the clipboard another app may be able to pick that up, but would have no idea that it is your Amazon password).

It is important to only install trusted software on your devices though. If you suspect an app may be doing something nefarious then it is probably worth researching, or defaulting to not installing it.

It is also worth noting that we cannot recommend jailbreaking your device. Built-in security protections can be circumvented by jailbreaks or jailbroken apps.

And if Apple ever discovers this, they will reject the App and remove the developer from the iOS Developer Program:

22.7 Developers who create Apps that surreptitiously attempt to discover user passwords or other private user data will be removed from the iOS Developer Program

(of course the damage may already have been done then - for some individuals)

  • Excellent point, @XIII. But that is also partly why I mentioned not jailbreaking devices (as then Apple's rules go out the window).
