Why doesn't the Icon for some of my popular apps show, It just shows the generic key lock Icon?

edited March 2016 in iOS

When adding Log-in information into the Logins Categories, the Icon for the website comes up with just the generic key lock Icon? Most of these websites are very popular and I can see their Icon when I visit the site. Can I resolve this somehow?

    Hi @ranman,

Do you have a website field for each of these websites, and does that field contain the URL of the website? For example, if you have a Facebook login, does it have a website field with something that looks like:

    On it?

If not, please try adding that. The first website that is listed is the one that is checked for a Rich Icon. So if you have multiple listed you may need to change the order such that the one with the icon is listed first.

If that doesn't help, please let us know what the URLs are that you have saved that are not showing Rich Icons. I can't make any promises at this point about adding any additional icons, but I can at least confirm or deny that it works with my setup, which may lead to further troubleshooting.

  • Ben, Thanks for the input but, just so I'm clear the Web address works, the app opens up from 1Password login but, the Icon for the site will not replace the generic Icon. I have deleted the login and reentered it making sure it was in correctly (http:// vs https:// for secure sites). It will open to the website but, not show the Icon in the login section of 1Password? Please let me know if you think of anything else it might be.

    Thanks, ranman

  • @bwoodruff If time allows, a technical question for you. I'm endlessly fascinated by rich icons and when I was on the standalone app had about 40 of my own, but I ran into a little issue when I switched to Families, so have to rely on 1P pulling them over from the various websites. Why don't all websites have them? Are they something a company pays to create? Let's take Life is Good as an example - an established company http://www.lifeisgood.com/ - why wouldn't one show up for them? Or my local bank https://www.mvbank.com/ I'm just curious why some logins have them and some don't. Or even ever useful https://www.speedpass.com/
This is very low priority but as I found this already established question I thought I'd ask. Hope you don't mind. Polly

    Hi @iamecho,

Thanks for the followup question. :+1:

Why don't all websites have them?

Rich Icons for 1Password Logins come from our Rich Icons server, which only has a few hundred icons for the most used sites.

Are they something a company pays to create?

No, websites do not pay us to add their Rich Icons.

Might I suggest the "custom icons" solution for these websites? Here's how to add custom icons to 1Password logins:

    • In 1Password for Mac select the Login and enter edit mode.
    • From the Finder drag the image over the item's icon.
    • Save your changes.

    Hope that this helps

  • Thanks @Rad . Yes, the custom icons worked beautifully on the standalone app but I've had some problems using them in Families. It's not a huge deal, but thank you for the suggestion.

    Hello again @iamecho,

I just added a custom icon to a 1Password Login from one of my Families vaults using 1Password for Mac and it worked like a charm. Could you please tell us more about the problems that you're experiencing?

    Thank you!

  • It's a really long story @Rad and I've been working with your crack team of experts (Mitch, Jacob, Kyle, and Dave). My understanding is it's a mac issue and a report has been filed with Apple already. CPU spikes and all sorts of things outside of my pay grade.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly, @iamecho! :+1:

I am well aware of this issue, and we can work around it if you like.

    Here's the workaround:

    • Add the custom icons. The CPU usage may spike.
    • Restart 1Password mini: Help > Troubleshooting > Restart 1Password mini
    • The CPU usage should be back to normal.

    Hope that this helps

  • @Rad I will try that, thank you. When I was using the standalone app I probably had 40 custom icons. Is that okay? I just google the logo in question, grab a screenshot (.png) and add the icon.

    Hello again, @iamecho.

When I was using the standalone app I probably had 40 custom icons. Is that okay?

If 1Password for for Mac starts to lag after adding a few custom icons, you can restart 1Password mini and resume adding more icons afterwards.

I just google the logo in question, grab a screenshot (.png) and add the icon.

That sounds right. Personally, I Google the icon, then save the image to my /Downloads folder, then drag it over the item's icon.

Please let us know if this works for you, once you get a chance to try it.

    All the Best,
