watchtower automatic checking

Hello!

There are services like https://haveibeenpwned.com/ which check to see if your accounts have been compromised. Does 1password watchtower also do something similar?

In other words, if there was a large bankofamerica account leak tomorrow, would watchtower warn me that I need to change my account details ASAP? If it does, does it just issue that warning to everyone that has a bofa account? Or does it check your email against a list (like the HaveIBeenPwnd services does)?

    Hi there @diego898,

    I can answer this question.

It is the former. Basically if you enable Watchtower 1Password will periodically download a database with information about sites which were compromised. Then 1Password cross-checks your data with that list of compromised sites using the last time you updated that item.

We do not upload your usernames and passwords to any website! We don't even upload which sites you use, we just download the list of all the current sites which should be checked against.

So if Bank of America was compromised tomorrow 1Password's list of compromised sites would be updated with that new entry, and your Bank of America item would be flagged by Watchtower.

    Hope this helps.
