Can I ignore duplicate / multiple installations and just install to the System drive?
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to maintain a bootable copy of my System drive. At some point in the past, 1Password updates started complaining about multiple copies of 1Password. I found that I had to unmount my backup drive before 1Password installation would work without complaining. Can I just force 1Password to update the copy in the Applications folder on the system drive, rather than prompting me to remove the multiple copies? The current behavior is more disruptive than it needs to be. It shouldn't be a hassle to update any Mac application.

Hi @JWS,
I apologize for the frustration here! There is a reason that this new behaviour is necessary, and I’ll give you a bit of insight into why we’re being particular.
1Password mini is actually a separate entity form 1Password the app. When you launch 1Password, the apps asks the operating system to find and open 1Password mini, so that the two can work together to give you access to your database. We can’t provide a specific file location to the operating system, all we can do is request the process. Starting in OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), the system got a little bit overzealous when searching for mini. Instead of finding the appropriate mini (inside /Application Support), it would find a rogue mini in /Downloads or in a backup drive and open that. This resulted in connection errors between the main app and the min and was generally a bad scene.
The workarounds here are to exclude 1Password from your backup (you can always snag a new copy of 1Password from our downloads page if necessary), or to exclude your backup clone from Spotlight indexing. I know it’s not ideal, and we’d love to do more here, unfortunately, this behaviour comes from the operating system, and there’s not a lot we can do about that.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this, I’d be happy to continue the conversation.

Thanks for the explanation. I will exclude the Clone from Spotlight and see if that fixes it.
