1Password Install on Wrong Drive - Cannot Fix
I have had lots of problems with 1Password and other apps, to the point I just did a clean re-install of OS X, only to have strange issues again, only this time I know what is causing them. I had backed up apps on a secondary drive and unfortunately Spotlight finds them there and thinks that's where they should be installed. I have since removed all copies of apps on this secondary drive. I restarted the machine and now it said I could install 1Password from the app store. I did it and it says it is installed, but it is not on the primary drive or secondary drive, yet it did create the entire path to where it used to be installed on the secondary drive (all other trouble apps are now happily installed on primary drive, only 1Password failed). It also created an Applications directory that is empty on the secondary drive. There must be remnants someplace on my machine that point to 1Password being in this other location. I've followed all help I could find on removal of files in Library directories (couldn't find any), but still no luck. Please help.

I just tried installing again and initially you see the download file appear under Applications on the primary drive, then it disappears and a Library/Receipts directory is created on my secondary drive and then the app is installed where it used to be backed up (but was deleted) on the secondary drive. I made an error above where I said it only set up the path to the secondary drive, it actually did install it there. Very frustrating.

Even tried moving the app to the primary application drive and then running it. It launched. Thought that might set up some variables someplace. Then I deleted it and restarted the machine to let the app store install it again and back to the original problem.

Two more pieces of potentially useful information:
1. I noticed on the new install BEFORE I first tried to install my previously purchased 1 Password from the app store it already was telling me about an update, meaning it very quickly found that app backup on the secondary drive and considered it the primary install.
2. I think this is related to the issue I posted in February (along with others) at the link below. Back then when I got a 1Password update or install i just got an error. I bet it was related to the install being seen as located on the secondary drive. If we can solve what is happening to me now, perhaps some folks could have that other problem solved as well.

Hi @efudd,
I'm really sorry you've run into this problem with the App Store install process.
I filed a bug with Apple about this back in 2011, and they very quickly responded "behaves as intended, will not fix". Unfortunately that doesn't help anyone that runs into this situation, which can be extremely frustrating for everyone since the remedy isn't a menu item you can choose to just reset everything.
Have you tried:
quitting app store.app
deleting the install from the secondary drive
deleting the Mac App Store cache directory
emptying the trash
restarting
attempting to install 1Password againLet me know how it goes, I'm hopeful this is able to get you back into a happy place.

Thanks for you help Rudy! You saved my bacon! For anybody else going through this, I also did the following, which may or may not have made a difference, but I'd recommend it:
- In that cache directory I found two agilebits files - i deleted them both.
- I had two other accounts on the same machine and went into each of them and did what was instructed above with the cache, closing down the app, emptying trash.

Something of note: I had this problem with 5 other apps from Apple, but in those cases deleting the copies on the extra drive was sufficient. It was only for 1Password that I needed to do the cache cleanout, so something special about your app.

On behalf of Rudy, you're quite welcome! I'm really glad to hear that solved the problem for you. Thanks for following up here with the additional details.
We're always happy to help, so please let us know if you need anything else. Have a great weekend! :)

Further for people to consider: I had this problem because I was using a backup program other than TimeMachine and it was backing all my apps up on another local drive. OS X doesn't recognize that as a backup, so it gets confused and sees it as a second installation. If you use TimeMachine (which I now do again) then it won't make that mistake. This is rather insidious. If you must have a backup of this app then go into Preferences and set up Spotlight Search NOT to search in that backup. I'm told this will work and keep the App Store from finding it, but I have no proof. However, if you have already seen the failure, you first must do the cache flush above. Enjoy!

Thanks for the explanation! I'm glad to hear that worked for you! Cheers! :)
