Feature Suggestion: Touch ID for the Mac via iPhone

Now that I have an iPhone with Touch ID, every time I have to evoke 1Password to fill in a password I look at my iPhone lying next to me and think: why can't I identify myself via its Touch ID sensor?
The MacBook and the iPhone know each other anyway. Bluetooth is enabled. To me this is such an obvious solution that I’m kinda puzzled Apple hasn’t come up with it anyway.
I checked if there are any apps that do something like it and came up with a few solutions like this:

Now, unlocking my Mac is the one thing where I still would be OK to type my password.
But if 1Password could do something like this for filling in passwords: That would be awesome :)

  • Hi @UdoS,

Agreed; this would be an awesome feature. But we need to figure out how to do it securely. Hopefully that is something we can do in the future. :)

    Hi Ben,

yes, of course I’d trust you to only add this feature if you could do it securely. Thanks for listening :)

    Hi,

I think I have a similar idea, that the user is able to fill in a password to a browser with a touch of the finger on my iPhone. But I want to take this one step further: The computer doesn’t need a copy of the 1Password vault. The phone can send that particular password to the computer over Bluetooth or WiFi.

There could be a few reasons why I want to keep the 1Password vault away from the computer:

    • The computer is a work computer, but I just want to log in to a website using a password in my personal vault
    • The computer is a home computer, but I need to sign in to corporate website using a password in my Team vault
    • The computer is a shared computer

    My workarounds:

    • Find the password on my iPhone, type it in the browser
    • Store my passwords for work in a vault and my passwords for home in another, using different master passwords

For my suggestion, this is what I imagine might happen when a user tries to log in to a website:

    1. Go to the login page
    2. Click some button provided by browser extension
    3. Push notification appear on my phone, I tap on that
    4. 1Password launched, I authenticate myself with Touch ID
    5. The password information for the site appears
    6. I press a button to send over the password
    7. App sends the password to the computer via Bluetooth or WiFi
    8. Browser extension fill in the password.

Finally, I have to say that I have higher confidence in the iOS security model than that of the Mac. To me, iPhone is a trusted device and I trust it with all my passwords. My Mac doesn’t need to know all the passwords, it only need to know the password for that particular website I am logging in.

  • All very interesting ideas. :) The challenge is finding a way to make it all happen in a way that meets our security standards. And then finding the development resources to get it implemented, of course. ;) Definitely something I'd be interested in seeing us offer. Hopefully we can find a way to make it happen down the road.

    Ben
