Manual Export/Import of 1PIF file from Windows to iOS

I’m having trouble importing a vault to my iPhone using a 1PIF file that was exported from the 1Password windows application.

I’ve exported the file using the 1Password 4 desktop application for Windows (Current shipping version then beta). I get a successful message saying that 8 Items have been exported. I was able to view the 1PIF file in notepad and saw the items there. I sync the file to the 1Password application using iTunes File Sharing feature. The 1Password iOS app sees the 1PIF file under Advanced -> Import Vault and I am able to import said file into my vault which completes successfully. When I check the vault, none of the passwords are there. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

I purchased the Pro Features so I can use multiple vaults. It doesn't show up in the vault I imported the file to, nor all vaults.

I came across an old forum post that had a perl script to convert the file to UTF-8 , but it didn't seem to work for me.

1Password Version: 4.6.0 Beta - 605

    Hi @commanderkeen ,

Only the Desktop apps can import 1PIF files. From there you can sync to your iPhone in various ways, such as Dropbox.

Edit: for future readers, I've just learned that 1Password for iOS version 6.4.1 can import an exported 1PIF*.

    * 1PIFs generated from 1Password 4 w/OPVaults may be problematic.

I bought the desktop app because I didn't want to use any of the available syncing services. I don't want my vault in the cloud.

Also, if that's the case, AgileBits should update what it says on the app: http://imgur.com/Ey0GU0p

    Hi @commanderkeen ,

If you want to transfer the data, it only needs to be a once time sync. After that, you can disable the sync and be done with it,

I've got the WIFI syncing to work, but you can only sync to your primary vault not the additional vaults you buy. Is there any way to WIFI sync to the other vaults or from different devices? I have a work laptop with a vault and another laptop with a personal vault.

    Hi @commanderkeen,

When you were attempting to import your data to your iPhone, were you following the directions in our support pages?

    Restoring manual backups

The instructions specifically mention backups, but your .1pif file should appear in the same place.

I've got the WIFI syncing to work, but you can only sync to your primary vault not the additional vaults you buy. Is there any way to WIFI sync to the other vaults or from different devices? I have a work laptop with a vault and another laptop with a personal vault.

Wi-Fi sync was designed to keep one desktop computer synced up with multiple mobile devices. If you’re looking to sync different vaults from multiple devices, your most flexible sync option is Dropbox. I know you mentioned earlier that you were hoping to avoid the cloud, but I’d like to tell you a little bit about why we feel using a cloud-based sync is safe for your data (and our own - many of us on the team use Dropbox to sync our data).

We are very confident about storing 1Password data in the cloud, as your data file is encrypted with an exceedingly secure encryption algorithm called AES. Even if someone were to acquire a copy of your 1Password data file, it would be extremely difficult (approaching impossible in a human lifetime) for them to actually gain access to your passwords without your Master Password. In short, we believe it is just as secure as having the data on your laptop. To learn more about cloud data security, have a read through our Knowledgebase article on Cloud Security.

And you can see the thoughts behind our data format's design here.

Also, you can check out our blog for many more articles that go into the nitty gritty math behind what makes 1Password so secure.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

@Megan I tried to copy over the backup folder created by 1Password Windows Desktop application and the iOS application didn't recognize the files under the backup/restore feature. The file was identified in the import menu but did not import because the file type was not recognized.

If you are so confident in the encryption, send me a copy of your vault = P

I really want to maintain an offline sync. I didn't even want to use the 1PIF file as a method transferring my accounts as that file is not encrypted.

    Feature Requests

    • Fix broken import of 1PIF file
    • Allow import of .agilekeychain via iTunes filesharing / iOS import
    • Enable WIFI Sync for vaults other than the primary vault

    Hi @commanderkeen,

It seems that we’re having the same conversation in multiple places. Since you’re also working through this with a member of our support team via email, I’ll close this thread so we can keep the conversation in one place. We’ll work with you via email until we get everything sorted out. :)

    Hi @commanderkeen,

Since we've sort of duplicated this thread via email, I'd like to continue there if that's OK with you. :-)
