Is my data safe when I trade in my iPhone?
Hi. Today I traded in my old iPhone at my local Apple Store (in the UK) for a brand new one. I understand that Apple will erase all data from the old phone and I believe a third party contractor is involved in that. As I understand it, the old phone will then be available for reuse by another owner. I did not think of it at the time, but should I have taken any steps to safeguard my 1Password data, either to preserve data or ensure it is not compromised ? Is there any action I should take now? I have 1Password on my Mac and my data is currently all present there. I have set up my new iPhone and restored the iOS app and the data is all there too. So far, so good on data preservation, but I am still concerned about security. Thanks!

@simon_merc as long as you used a strong Master Password your data is safe.I'm also confident that whomever Apple trusts to wipe data off an iPhone before it's resold is subject to intense scrutiny. In the future, though, it's good practice to perform a factory reset on any device that you plan to relinquish physical control over. (I even did this when I had an iPad mini's screen repaired, but I'm also more paranoid than most.) So the short answer is that you're fine, but this is something to keep in mind next time :)

Quick response - thank you! I should have said, that I went through a process with the Apple person at the store, where he went into Settings and had to press 'delete all data' twice. Would that be the factory reset? i presume the third party used by Apple does some kind of deeper cleansing.

Correction, he asked me to press the delete data buttons. Which I did.

@simon_merc that sounds like it was the factory reset, yes. So between doing that, using a strong Master Password, and the features 1Password uses to protect your data no matter what, you should be good :)
