Safari keeps launching itself
I usually use Chrome, but occasionally have to use Safari, whether for the site (e.g. Apple) or to run without ad blockers and JavaScript blockers. After I run Safari, for at least several hours, sometimes even days, Safari keeps launching itself. The first time, it loads the last site, but after that it launches without a window. The only extension I have is 1Password, and I believe it's the current version.
I do get Console messages, for example:
14/08/2016 16:48:00.753 pkd[304]: enabling pid=51758 for plug-in com.agilebits.onepassword4.safariextensioncompanion(6.3.2) 68DEAEA3-B967-4BF4-993C-53780FDB2B5C /Applications/1Password 6.app/Contents/PlugIns/SafariExtensionCompanion.appex

14/08/2016 16:48:27.343 syncdefaultsd[51746]: Can't register com.apple.Safari
That seems to imply that there's a problem.
Any pointers?
Safari 9.1.2 (11601.7.7), OS X 10.11.6, 1Password 6.3.2 (632001), extension 4.5.8, MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
Thanks,
John

Hi John ( @Mussau ),
I'm sorry to hear about the trouble with Safari launching itself when you'd rather it didn't. Have you tried disabling or uninstalling the 1Password extension to see if the problem continues? If not I'd like to have you do that, please. Preferably uninstall the extension completely from Safari's Preferences > Extensions pane.
If you need to re-add it at any point you can do so here:
1Password Browser Extensions
Please let us know how it turns out.

I uninstalled the extension, and it's launched twice since then. Nothing obvious appears in the console log apart from:
15/08/2016 20:07:28.086 sandboxd[142]: ([44200]) storeaccountd(44200) deny file-write-create /Users/john/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ProductionBag
I trashed the Safari caches, so we'll see how it turns out.

Hopefully that helps! It sounds like 1Password isn't causing the problem, but I'm not sure what is - that's a bit of a strange problem! I'm curious if trashing the Safari caches does the trick.

Hmm, it may have helped a little, but I'm still getting Safari to launch itself. Perhaps it's not so often, but still happening. There are lots of things about Safe Browsing updates, (see below) so I'll try turning that off.
16/08/2016 17:16:07.931 com.apple.cts[44131]: com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.Update: scheduler_evaluate_activity told me to run this job; however, but the start time isn't for 71 seconds. Ignoring.
It would be nice to get to the bottom of this!

Understandable, @Mussau. Though if the problem is still happening without the 1Password extension installed it does not sound as though 1Password would be the cause. You may want to try inquiring over at Apple's own support forum, to see if the folks there have had any experience with this sort of issue:
Safari - Official Apple Support Communities
I didn't see any existing discussions there about Safari specifically, but I did find one report that someone was having this difficulty with Mail. According to their post it turned out that their file system permissions were set incorrectly, and correcting them using Disk Utility seemed to resolve the issue.

Yes, I'll shift it to the Apple forums, though they're painful to navigate with such high volumes. Repairing permissions isn't an option in 10.11's Disk Utility, as far as I can tell (unless that's a hidden feature now), so I won't try going there for a while.

Reporting back, apparently with the problem solved. I removed various things from internet plugins and some launch daemons, and it all seems to work OK. Next thing is to allow plug-ins again, and add the 1Password extension again, and hopefully we'll be good.
