I'm sorry if there's been some confusion with 1Password and the different ways in which it works. It sounds like you've been using 1Password standalone license, and what you're talking about is a 1Password Account. To be able to use 1Password as you always have and sync your data via iCloud or Dropbox, you need to pick the option "Use without an Account" the next step will guide you to setting up sync so you can use whatever method you were using before.
