Have you looked at the large type feature? This was added approximately a year ago. If you designate that field as a password field, you can choose large type. It will then display a large window containing the password, and each digit is numbered. Drag this window to make it stay on screen, while you type the requested digits into the website. After that, you can manually close the window.
That sounds like it would handle your use case. If I've missed something, please let me know.

@ag_kevin Hi, yes you make a good point. Although those numbers are not present on iOS versions of 1P, understandably screen real estate is at a premium. My eyesight is reasonable though, I wonder if you could implement teeny tiny numbers?
