Safari App Extensions for Sierra and El Capitan

Now that Sierra is out, Apple is pushing new Xcode-based extensions that are bundled within apps, instead of extensions distributed through the web-based gallery. Can we expect 1Password to distribute its extension through the macOS app in future, and, if so, what plans are being made to manage the transition? Will users be required to un-install the existing extension? Will the update be applied automatically? :)

Thanks so much for your interest, @Deleted User! We were very excited to see Safari App Extensions introduced at WWDC this year. We are especially excited about bundling updates to the extension in with the 1Password app itself. There are indeed many benefits to this coupling.

Apple has thought through the situation you described and they provide a mechanism for seamlessly migrating from JavaScript Safari Extensions to Safari App Extensions. So, if you have the current extension, the Safari App Extension should just magically take over once we are ready to release it. The previous extension will be removed and the Safari App Extension will take its place and be enabled if the previous extension was also enabled.

We have spent some time working with Safari App Extensions this summer and we are very excited about the possibilities. Some other items pushed themselves to the top of our priority list in the last couple of months, so we weren't ready with something to release for the Sierra launch. The good news is that the experience of using the 1Password extension will not be substantially different when we make the switch, at least in the first incarnation.

Thanks again for your post. We'll definitely have more to say about Safari App Extensions in the coming weeks. Be sure to keep an eye on our blog for these kinds of big announcements. :)
