"Copy & Reveal" option in mobile app

When clicking on the password in the mobile app I almost always choose "Copy" but first click "Reveal" so I can know and maybe remember this password next time. It would be so nice if there was also a "Copy & Reveal" option so that both actions could be performed at once. Seems like a simple yet convenient option to add?

  • Hi @phirenze,

Thanks for the feedback! Part of the point of having 1Password is to have strong and unique passwords for each site, while not having to remember them. If your passwords are such that you can remember them, they probably aren't strong enough or aren't unique (or you're very gifted in the memory department!).

Could you please help me understand your use case a bit better here? What is the reasoning for trying to memorize all of your passwords? And are you using strong and unique passwords for each site?

    Please let us know.

    Ben

Hi Ben. Thanks for your response. I guess I should first say that I have often seen similar responses to feature requests from you and your team. I understand that 1Password mission is for users to have strong and unique passwords for each site / account. But I do not agree with limiting the product as a way of forcing users to do as 1P wishes them to live their life of online security and passwords.

And I would argue that if 1P was insistent that all passwords be complex enough to not be recalled by memory, then there would not be a need to the Reveal button in the first place. But of course that would not be prudent or wise "feature". Of course there are times when you need to see your password. Whether it be a 15 character randomly created password with numbers, letters, and other characters or a familiar password that you use on a site that has little security risk.

I think the choice is better left to the customer in regards to how complex the password should be. Some of my passwords are randomly generated and some are more familiar to me. And that is the way I choose to deal with my passwords and online security. I'm sure this is the same with most people. And I'm also sure that there are some people that aren't using any random generated passwords. And although 1Password strives to have people use better passwords I do not think the product should dictate how the user operates.

To answer your question(s): Could you please help me understand your use case a bit better here? What is the reasoning for trying to memorize all of your passwords? And are you using strong and unique passwords for each site?

As I mentioned not all my passwords are memorized. Most are not. But I do use a series of passwords that can be memorized. These less secure passwords are used on sites I feel there are less of a security concern with the information I provide them. These PWs are not phrases or normal words, but they can be memorized.

When accessing 1P to obtain a PW I like to take a look at it and not just blindly copy / paste it. That may help me remember next time that the PW is complex, or it may remind me of the exact PW. So I choose Reveal first, and then choose Copy. I'd like to be able to do this in one button press instead of two. Keeping this ability from the 1P user is not going to get one to use more complex passwords. But adding it will make life a little more convenient. :)

Thanks for your time and consideration.

I understand your perspective on this, and we don't want customers to feel "forced" to do anything. On the other hand it is very difficult to justify spending development cycles building something that is arguably counter to our mission.

But adding it will make life a little more convenient.

And that may be enough of a reason to consider adding it at some point down the road. I'll certainly pass the feedback along to our development team for their consideration.

    Thanks!
