Firefox browser extension won't open after update - HELP!!
I just updated 1Password to the latest version on Windows 7 and then when I opened Firefox (V49.0.1) it stated it needed to update; I clicked the button to update and one annoying thing was it kept coming up with that update box even though I had already clicked to update.
So I finally got to the update page and clicked the update button, Firefox seemed to install the update fine, but I was redirected to this page after installation:
https://agilebits.com/browsers/auth.html
Screenshot of the page:
I clicked the link but it just went back to the installation page which I just came from.
So I tried opening 1Password via the toolbar icon it refused to open; so I restarted my browser and it still wouldn't work.
After this I decided to uninstall the browser extension and do a reinstall - but this didn't work either.
I haven't tried Chrome as yet - hopefully that isn't broken too.
Please advise.
Thanks!

Ok, I just tried Chrome and when I opened it I got this: (I did not see this in Firefox)
I clicked "Authorise" and it works correctly in Chrome.
Also, not sure if it was related to 1Password but for the first time ever I had a popup from the Windows taskbar asking me to backup my "encrypted files" with Windows "Certificate Export Wizard" - I don't use this service so I found it a bit weird.

@cyphix333: I'm sorry for the trouble! Unfortunately the browsers handle extension updates themselves, and the way they do this is a bit...odd and unpredictable at times. If your patient, the browser will update it eventually, but if you're in a hurry, you can always install the latest version of the 1Password extension from the AgileBits website:
1Password browser extensions
I'm also sorry for the confusion caused by 1Password's new browser authentication. To be clear, your screenshot above showing the verification codes in the browser and the popup window are 1Password. Just verify that you've actually just tried to use 1Password in the browser and that the codes match, and you're all set!
However, the "Certificate Export Wizard" and the "encrypted files" messages are defnitely not from 1Password and may point to what's causing trouble for you in Firefox. Do you have "security" software installed (or remnants of it) that may be interfering with both 1Password specifically and secure connections in general? In some cases these actually install illegitimate, self-signed certificates in browsers so they can decrypt and monitor even HTTPS connections. Please let me know what you find!

@brenty The thing is I don't think Firefox handled it itself; when I opened Chrome I got that page and it seemed to auto-update the extension afterwards; but in Firefox I got that popup thing telling me I needed to update it, when I clicked to update it I ended up landing on that page you linked above: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions
So I actually did install it through that page and unfortunately it doesn't work :(
So that authentication page I posted above I didn't see in Firefox until after it set it had successfully installed/update the extension, then it redirected me there, however I didn't get a popup like in Chrome with those verification codes; I only seen what I pasted a screenshot of in my first post.
As for the "Certificate Export Wizard" - I only seen this when I was doing the updates in Chrome (not 100% sure when it happened, may have been after it had updated).
I don't really have any security software installed other thsn Avast Antivirus, Windows Firewall and probably Windows Defender running.

@cyphix333: Thanks for getting back to me. That's got to be frustrating, but we'll get this sorted out!
Since you mentioned it, Avast will cause both of the problems I outlined previously: it interferes with the connection between 1Password and its browser extensions, and it performs a person-in-the-middle attack on your secure connections to websites (which will cause problems when you try to install the extensions). So I think that's where we should start.
If possible (though typically they don't give the user control of this), make an exception to allow 1Password in the first place, both in Avast and the Windows Firewall (so far there haven't been any reports of Windows Defender interfering, and I use it myself):
Configure security settings
But it's likely that it simply won't allow this, in which case you'll need to download the extension using another browser and drag the file to install it manually to make sure it isn't damaged or modified:
Troubleshooting browser installation
However, it may not even be possible to establish a secure connection to download the extension unless you disable the "Web Shield" feature, which uses an illegitimate certificate to insert itself into your connections that are meant to be secure. You can find more information about this here:
Breaking the chain of trust
If you're still having trouble, try disabling Avast completely, along with other extensions that may be blocking the connection. That will help narrow down the cause.

Just as a data point, I do not have Avast or any other antivirus installed (other than Windows Defender) and I'm seeing exactly the same problems described by cyphix above. Happened immediately upon upgrading 1Password on my Windows 10 system. I don't think the antivirus programs are to blame.

To clarify, I'm seeing all the same things cyphix sees when using Chrome. I don't have Firefox. Upgraded this morning, and the problems I was having led me to Google, which led me here.

@BlipBlopBloop: Definitely check your Windows security and firewall settings. I and many others found these 'reset' on us after upgrading. Honestly, though that's a confusing user experience, that's probably for the best given that Windows 10 is radically different in many ways. Migrating old settings to new ones can be problematic. Be sure to follow the guides I posted above (though not the one for Avast, obviously) and let me know what you find!

@brenty Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I didn't try allowing the ports as suggested, instead I went the alternate route you suggested by downloading the .xpi file and installing it manually; tried this, but unfortunately it didn't help.
I had a look in the program under File > Preferences and the extension shows as installed; however when I click the installed button I see this:
No matter which one I click on it tells me it "can't install it as Firefox is currently open...." even though it isn't (I even checked running processes); however I did notice that 1Password was connected to the wrong Firefox (Developer Edition); so I clicked on the version link on the left and pointed it to the right version... this didn't seem to help though.
I then tried disabling Avast but this didn't help either I'm afraid.

No more help here? It's getting rather annoying :(

Sorry for the delay, @cyphix333. How did you install the xpi you downloaded? Did you use the Install Add-on from File option in Firefox or was it something else?
If you create a new, empty profile, are you able to install there?

Ok, here is what happened:
I created a new profile and went and installed the extension, this time I got a notification that I needed to restart Firefox for the installation to be complete (never got this when I was trying with my default profile); so I restarted and then it launched that auth window again, but STILL no verification numbers came up asking me to authorise it.
So I clicked the link on the page to go download the extension, I installed it once AGAIN and once it installed it redirected that auth page again and THIS time I seen the verification numbers asking me to authorise it.
So then I restarted in my default profile, uninstalled the 1Password extension, restarted, reinstalled, didn't ask me to restart, but I did anyway, it led me to that page again but with NO verification numbers, so I clicked the link to go and reinstall it again just like I did with the new profile, but unfortunately it didn't show me the verification numbers this time.

This is really strange, @cyphix333. I'm sorry for all the rigamarole. This really should be a simple, one-time process of showing the authorization page with the correct authorization code to validate. I'm wondering if there's something interfering with the connection somehow and the extension is getting into a bad state. I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Windows PC:
Attach the Diagnostics Report(s) to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.
Please do not post your Diagnostics Report(s) in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report(s) in our inbox.
You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report(s) and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :)
Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!

Ok, I just wanted to post an update, I sent this through with the support ticket as well:
I have gone through everything to get this working.
I disabled ALL my extensions and tried to get it working but no go; it seems if you have ANY extension enabled it prevents it from showing that "It has been installed, restart now" dialog, I only see that when I have ALL extensions disabled, however it still won't show me the verification numbers to authorise it.
I have gone through and made sure no plugins are set to "Always activate", have updated all plugins and extensions, have disabled Avast many times throughout this and NOTHING has fixed the issue.
The only time I can get it to work is if I start with a completely clean/new profile.
Then something interesting happened...
I had basically given up getting it to work after I sent the last email and was going to wait to hear back from you...
So I had Firefox open, still with that auth page open I think from my last restart, then I went to restore my saved session with the Session Manager add-on I use and shortly after session manager launched my saved session in a new window I noticed those verification numbers pop-up on the screen which were coming from the other window with that page still open - not sure how that happened, perhaps it was a delayed response for them to come up in Firefox and as I still had left it open it decided to finally show them!?
I'm too scared to remove it and try again now that I have finally got it working.
Very weird indeed!

Wow. Thanks for following up with that detailed description. I'm sorry it was such an ordeal, but I'm glad to hear it worked! From the sound of things, it really seems like the profile is corrupt since disabling everything didn't help but creating a new profile did. Hopefully you won't have any more trouble like this, but if you do, that's where I'd start. You should be able to import bookmarks and install extensions in the new profile (after confirming that 1Password works there, of course), and then if it stops working again you'll have a good idea of why (just installed X extension, etc.) And then just reply here or via email — whichever you prefer — and we'll take it from there. :)

@brenty Well, just updated Firefox to 49.0.2 and it's broken again; tried reinstalling it multiples times but I can't even get the authentication page to come up at all now, it simply doesn't launch it. Aargh!!
I guess the next step is to try a clean profile as you suggested.

@cyphix333: Aww man... :(
Yeah, definitely try it with a clean profile, and send us fresh diagnostics if that fails. That should at least make it easier to pinpoint the cause. Thanks for your patience and willingness to work with us on this issue!

@brenty Just wanted to update that I never got around to setting up a new profile as some more strange things happened haha
It was still in it's "not working" stage and then I logged into a site I had never logged in to before; and then 1Password came up asking if I wanted to save the password - after this it just started working.
Then, I can't remember what I did now, but it may have just been after restarting the browser that it stopped working again; so then I just kept using it for awhile and was going to get to setting up a new profile at some point, but then at some point or another it after I launched Firefox it came up with that Authentication page and showed me the verification numbers; so I typed them in and now it's working again.
The rollercoaster continues... :)

Wow. Thanks for letting me know! I'm glad to hear it's working now. This is an oddly suspenseful saga. I wonder if, now that Halloween is behind us, everything goes back to normal...until next year. :naughty:
