when will the stand-alone password generator be available in the IOS app/browser plug-in?

Can't use the IOS version of 1password to change passwords, because the Password Generator is only available while creating or editing an entry; the usual workflow is to go to a website's password-change form, enter a new Password (generated by the Generator), and then Save it, which 1password will recognize as a change and offer to save the change.

I know you'll say the workflow for this is different in IOS-- you edit the 1password entry first, then copy-and-paste the new password. That doesn't work for two reasons:

  1. most password-change forms require the old password to be entered, as well as a new one. Since editing the entry first clobbers the old password, it is not available! (the IOS Safari plug in does not allow browsing an entry and copying fields; it only allows selecting an entry and the default username+password getting auto-entered. This doesn't work on password change forms. On the Mac desktop app, this is possible because the Password Generator is also available from the Mini-app icon (it really should also be available in the main app, as it used to, from the Menu).

  2. often when changing passwords, it's an iterative process because a site's password rules are often complicated and inexpressible in the Password Generator, so multiple edit iterations are required until the site accepts the change. On the Mac desktop app, this is fine because each iteration 1password asks whether to save it. But on IOS, that is be very tedious and involves a lot of app switching and 1password edit-save cycles (which leaves those trial-and-error iterations as clutter in "historical passwords").

Really, 1password needs some strategy for handing password change activity on all platforms, and especially on IOS.

  • Hi @jamie_g,

Thanks for taking the time to write in!

It does. :) If you tap on the (i) icon to the right of a login you'll be able to see the details including the currently stored password and copy from there.

it only allows selecting an entry and the default username+password getting auto-entered. This doesn't work on password change forms

In most cases this should actually work. But some forms are finicky and the above mentioned method may be required.

On the Mac desktop app, this is possible because the Password Generator is also available from the Mini-app icon (it really should also be available in the main app, as it used to, from the Menu).

The Password Generator can be accessed in the main app on macOS by adding a new Password item.

Yes, I understand the frustration here. Hopefully we can come up with a way to better address this and/or more sites start adopting more sensible password requirements.

Really, 1password needs some strategy for handing password change activity on all platforms, and especially on IOS.

We can certainly agree that there is room for improvement in this area. I'll be happy to pass the feedback along to our development team for their consideration moving forward. I'm not aware of any plans in the works at this time, but hopefully as we free up some development cycles from other projects we can look at this as an area to look into.

    Thanks!
