on my new iphone 6s 1passw data did not transfer from my old (itunes) retore backup
a friend of mine (doing some tech support here) had since long 1passw on her iphone 6 (stand alone, not synced with either dropbox or icloud). After backing up to itunes, the iphone backup was restored to a brand new iphone 6s
Everything was fine, but sadly opening 1pass on new 6s does not find any data.
How can I restore the 1password data?

@Loris: You can restore your data from a backup saved using the built in backup/restore feature in 1Password for iOS, or sync it over from another device. Unfortunately 1Password doesn't have any control over the iTunes/iCloud backup/restore process, which is less than reliable, so we've built this feature into 1Password itself. Let me know how it turns out!

Is the backup feature ("create a backup you can download through itunes file sharing") automatic? I did not trigger it before the restore process to the new iphone, simply because I assumed that restoring to a new iphone would work (as it did in the past). I did not even know there was this possibility.
Second question: if no backup was done by 1pass iOS, can the 1password data somehow be extracted from a older itunes backup (can get those using time-machine)?

@Loris: No. Just as you backed up your device using iTunes, saving a 1Password backup is a manual process.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've been there. After the first time, I learned the hard way that iTunes/iCloud backup/restore does not always include everything. Sometimes it does. I wish I knew why, but only Apple may know for certain.

No. It isn't even clear if an iTunes/iCloud always actually contains all of the data, and simply fails to restore some of it, or if data is missing from the backup in the first place, so that may be a bit of a wild goose chase. That's something that only Apple could help with.
Other ways?
I and others have, on occasion, had success redoing the device restoration process. In these cases it seems that something just went wrong with the restore initially, so that it miraculously worked upon retrying. However, I'd exhaust all other options before attempting this (data on another device, in the cloud, etc.) since there's no guarantee that, even if 1Password's data is restored on the next try, that data from other apps may not fail to restore. Also, device restoration is a tedious process, and there's no way to tell if you'll be successful after 2 tries or 20, or not at all. Why not save a backup using 1Password on the old phone and then restore it on the new one?

Well Brenty I cannot save a backup from the old phone, that would have been really easy. The old iphone 6 was reinitialized because it goes to another person. So now way.
Now I can try to restore the old itunes sync data (which I still have) to the old iphone, see if that works. If yes, than i can back up 1passw data using the manual procedures, copy the folder to my desktop from itunes sync, and then import the data on the new iphone 6s .
In my opinion, for people using 1pass on iOS without any sync to other devices, you should make much clearer on your web site that they will lose data during an itunes backup procedure. The must be a clear alert. On the new iphone 6s we will chose the subscription model with automatic backup and web access. Hope that that model will allow me to import the data as described (if the data were restored in the first place). Since we have already paid the 1passw app is there a model to "upgrade" to subscriptions?

@Loris: I'm really sorry to hear that. I knew it was a long shot, but I didn't want to assume anything. I was hoping. :(

Correct. It really sounds like that's the only option left. I would recommend making a new, separate backup first. That way you could (presumably) pick up from where you are now at least if you're unsuccessful. You can't be too careful.

I'm not sure that makes sense, given that deleting any iOS app will result in its data being removed as well. And I'm not sure how/when/where an alert like that should be presented, but I'm open to suggestions. If I take my iPhone right now and wipe it without confirming that I have the data on another device, that's pretty risky. As someone who's lost data in the past due to an inadequate backup strategy, data loss is not something I'd wish on anyone. But a big part of the reason many people choose 1Password is because we don't tell them what to do with their data; it's entirely in their control. We could try to enforce sync or backup, but a lot of our users appreciate that 1Password doesn't nag them. If we add a warning and it pops up regularly, that's annoying. If we make it possible to dismiss it permanently, then it's just as easy to forget again.
On the new iphone 6s we will chose the subscription model with automatic backup and web access. Hope that that model will allow me to import the data as described (if the data were restored in the first place).
To be clear, the 1Password.com service can restore previous versions of items, but only if they were stored there originally. If you were not previously using a 1Password.com Account, none of your data will be there and this will not allow you to restore something that was only stored locally on a specific device, such as the old iPhone. While 1Password.com can help you avoid situations like this if you use it going forward, I wouldn't want you to subscribe believing that this can help you retrieve the data from the old iPhone, which is gone.
Since we have already paid the 1passw app is there a model to "upgrade" to subscriptions?
Licenses can't be applied to a subscription, but if you'll send a copy of the receipt and a link to this discussion to support@1password.com and ask for me, I'll see what I can do for you. Post the Support ID you receive here and I'll be able to find it quicker.

Some misunderstanding I believe. I ll try once again:
On the new 6s we will buy or upgrade 1pass subscription in any case.
When that is done, having on my desktop the backup folder saved from my old iphone 6 (assuming that the procedure described above will be concluded successfully; that means I will have moved to my desktop the 1pass folder that I saw on itunes clicking the 1pass app, after the iphone 6 restore process), then I can import manually (using iTunes sync once again but connected to my new 6s) the folder previosoly moved out of iTunes on my new subscription account.

@Loris: I'm not sure I follow your description (not your fault; iTunes is confusing), but I can tell you this definitively: if you have a
.1p4_zip
backup file you'd previously saved from 1Password using iTunes file sharing using this backup process, you can restore it into the app following the same guide. If you do not have a backup from 1Password though, you won't have anything to restore into 1Password directly; it would need to be a full device restore to attempt it. I'm sorry if I misunderstood. I hope that helps clarifying things.0 -
Brenty I have now that iTunes file (I was able to restore the old iphone 6 using the iTunes backup), so I can now import on the new iphone 6s using the procedure described.
I imagine I have to choose "use without an account" in the first screen and then "create a new 1pass vault" and the go to settings for the import procedure.
Correct?
Thanks for help, Loris0 -
@Loris: Yes, you're on the right track! Setup the app and choose "use without an account". That way you'll have a Primary local vault to restore to.
After that, if you setup a 1Password.com Account, you can migrate the data there. And once it's safe in 1Password.com, you never have to worry about doing backups, and can always login to the account on a device to access the data there.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can help with!
