Account vs classic sync

Hi there, haven't found a clear answer so I'll try here.

Been using 1P for years now, been syncing data over iCloud first and Dropbox then.
I'd like to know how do "1P account" works, vs the classic Dropbox sync. Or if you can point me to the right reading I'd appreciate.
