Request for custom item categories

I bought 1Password 3 years ago via the Apple App Store, tried it for awhile, and am now trying to migrate over from another program (Acrylic Wallet). There are two very glaring shortcomings with 1Password, both of which seem to have been mentioned in past forums going back 2-3 years, with no apparent attempt to add with updates. One is the ability to create custom categories. The categories provided are in my mind not categories but rather specific item entries (for example, driver license; maybe nice for one entry, but why a "category"?). One of the things I used Wallet for was keeping track of all my hardware (computers, cameras, etc) and I set up a "category" in Wallet called "Hardware". I did the same with about a dozen custom "categories". It looks like in 1Password this can be done with "Folders", but you have to use a pre-loaded category for entries, which leads me to the second glaring shortcoming with 1Password: the inability to create custom entry form templates. For a category like "Hardware" I know which fields (serial numbers, date of purchase, where purchased, etc) I want to set up, and I would like to be able to save a template to use for all items in that category. All of the above was possible with Acrylic Wallet going back 6-7 years ago.. Unfortunately Wallet is not being updated which is why I am now looking at alternatives. I have read from 1Password staff that these two items are being considered, but this was expressed going back 2-3 years ago. Can you give us some indication whether you are serious about adding these features, and if so, a timeline? Thank you.

    Hi @updeinva,

Thank you for taking the time to send us your thoughts about custom categories! Indeed, that's a popular feature request from customers, and definitely something our developers are investigating (for some time now, as you've noticed). It's also an "easier said than done" type of feature: it would require a great amount of effort and coordination for our developers to ensure compatibility between different versions and platforms, so it's not something simple that can be done overnight. But while I can't make any promises about if/when we'll be able to add that, I'll definitely add your comments to our internal tracker to let our developers know.

For now, if you have information that doesn't seem to fit into any existing category in 1Password, the Secure Notes category is a great option, and you can even add custom fields to organize your data the way you want. A post on our blog explains more about that: Secure all the things in Secure Notes

To make it easy to create multiple items with the same set of custom fields, you can set one up the way you want it, then save that as a "template". Then you can duplicate that item (right-click the item and choose Duplicate) and fill in the fields. You can group those items together by using Tags (or with Folders, as you mentioned). You can even add custom icons to those items.

I hope this helps, but if you need anything else, we're here for you! :)
