Can I delete 1password 6.5.3 on the mac and install 6.5.4 from the website. I can't update to it?
I have tried restarting the computer, downloading the 6.5.4 which looks like 6.3.5 in the download window and it goes the install process saying it was complete. 1P app still shows 6.5.3 and I still get the error "mini could not open quit and try again or contact Afilebits support.

If i'm reading your question right you're asking about switching to the website version of 1Password from the Mac App Store version? its certainly possible but you would need to keep that MacAppStore copy around so that the website version can find its license file.
It also sounds like you're attempting this just as we've run into an expiration issue with the website version. You'll want to get the latest version from https://1password.com/downloads/
