I have just updated on my Mac and see you are moving to a free app / monthly charge platform for distribution. As I bought 1P ages ago, will there still be free upgrades for the program as we go forward?

Certainly within the 1Password 6 version number. The Mac App Store version still has a standalone purchase option, so its not strictly free app/monthly charge. We switched to free + In App Purchase because a large number of customers ended up buying the app as a means to un-Freeze their subscription, which obviously was not the right solution there. We felt that this was the best course of action to remedy that situation.

There will definitely be a point in time where 1Password 6 joins the list of Legacy versions on https://agilebits.com/downloads. Apple will invariably release 10.13, 10.14, 10.15 and part of the development process means adding support for the new versions and sunsetting support for older versions of the OS.
