Disappointed with IOS functionality with 1P. What's a realistic expectation ?

I'm a long time user of 1P but I've never been happy with 1P with IOS. Especially autofilling. As a brand new 1P subscriber I"m hoping I can once and for all figure out what's a realistic expectation of what it can and cannot do. Am I doing something wrong or is it just not very effective in the IOS arena? What I've mostly been doing for a long time is opening the app, moving to the 1P listing, copying the password and moving back to the app. Am I missing something ?

  • Hi @garyduke,

Thanks for taking the time to write in.

Up until iOS 8 what you described was the only way to use a password manager on iOS. But in September of 2014 we released 1Password 5 which included the 1Password extension. We made it possible for any app developer to include our extension in their app, and many have done so:

    AgileBits Blog | Apps ❤ 1Password

With any app that supports the 1Password extension you can fill directly into the app. Do note though that there is no such thing as autofill on iOS. Regardless of what password management solution you use you need to invoke it in order to fill. iOS is pretty strict about how apps are able to interact with each other, and so autofill just isn't something that is currently possible.

The extension is available in Safari, and so nearly any page that we can fill on Mac we can also fill on iOS:

Use the 1Password extension to fill in Safari and apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

For apps that do not have the 1Password extension, or web pages that cannot be filled with it, the process you're describing is still the best way.

    Does that help? :)

Thanks so much, Ben. I'm happier now for two reasons: 1) You responded so quickly. I never realized I could such good answers so quickly by using the support forum. So a big thank you for that. 2) This sentence was so helpful: __ The extension is available in Safari, and so nearly any page that we can fill on Mac we can also fill on iOS:__. That was the missing nugget. Any sites that I can access via Safari will provide me that autofill. Thanks again. So glade I did this! :)

  • Excellent! Thanks for the follow up @garyduke. :) Glad to hear that information was helpful.

If we can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.
