What is this Icon Supposed to Be?

OK so this is not the most earth shattering question - but it's been bugging me for quite a while! :)

What is the first icon, from the iOS 1Password browser, supposed to represent? I think it's supposed to be the "window switcher" icon, but I find it unintuitive and it always makes me hesitate before I click on it.

The iOS Safari window switcher icon (second icon below) is far better. Any reason why you couldn't (re) use it? Assuming I've correctly identified the intent, reusing the Safari icon has a lot in its favour from a usability perspective.

  • Hey Dave!

Thanks for the feedback on this.

Any reason why you couldn't (re) use it?

I don't know what Apple's policy is on using their icons in 3rd party apps for UI elements, but I suspect if we could have we would have. We certainly don't want to start a legal battle with Apple over an icon. :)

The iOS Safari window switcher icon (second icon below) is far better.

Fortunately you can now use 1Password within Safari. The 1Password extension allows you to save and fill credentials right from within the Safari browser.

Use the 1Password extension to fill in Safari and apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thanks Ben. I had more-or-less forgotten that iOS 1Password could now do open and fill within iOS Safari. Good to be reminded. However I still think the 1Password icon looks like a briefcase rather than a window switcher! :)

While I'm here, let me say that I'm super impressed with the passion and expertise of the support team. I think it's a real competitive advantage for 1Password, and you should be proud of what you do. I've managed a support team in the past (as per my LinkedIn profile) which only makes me more impressed.

@ings, Mobile Safari may be more prevalent and I do use it predominantly but I don't see why 1Browser should stick with Apple's implementation.

Chrome's version is even more simplistic. Just a number indicating the number of open Tabs. [3] means 3 open tabs.

And just so you know, Mobile Chrome and Firefox also some of the Apps that love 1Password!

  • Thanks for the update and the kind words Dave! :)
