Two iOS apps using in-app purchase (no subscription) and shared vault?

I'm considering moving over to 1Password. I don't want to have a subscription for this to work. I'm trying to figure out if this is possible using the in-app Pro features.

Problem:

  • Using two iOS devices with in-app purchase for Pro features, can each have a "private" vault and a single "shared" vault between the two.

Given:

  • Two iOS devices. Not used on other platforms.
  • Both devices use the same Apple ID for iTunes purchases.
  • Both devices have separate iCloud IDs (meaning not a shared iCloud).

What's the downside of the in-app Pro purchase:

  • Can I restore the purchase if I change phones in the future?
  • Does the Pro purchase persist on iOS app update?
  • Since it's on the same iTunes account, is there a problem with the in-app purchase?

  • Hi @theshockwave,

Thanks for taking the time to write in.

1Password for iOS, even with the Pro features, does not have the ability to create vaults beyond the Primary vault. As such with the setup you're proposing you could have one vault that is shared between the two devices, or one vault on each device that is unique to that device, but you couldn't have two separate vaults using only 1Password for iOS with no other 1Password products (e.x. a 1Password.com membership).

The only way we could recommend doing this would be with our 1Password.com service.

To answer some of your other questions more directly though:

What's the downside of the in-app Pro purchase:

What is the difference between a 1Password account and a standalone license?

Can I restore the purchase if I change phones in the future?

In-app purchases are tied to your Apple ID, not the device.

Does the Pro purchase persist on iOS app update?

When purchasing 1Password as a standalone product you're licensing a specific version of 1Password (in this case 1Password 6 for iOS). In-version updates (e.x. 6.4, 6.5, etc) would be included. Upgrades such as e.x. 1Password 7 for iOS may be billed as a separate purchase.

Since it's on the same iTunes account, is there a problem with the in-app purchase?

Our intention is for each person using 1Password to purchase it, but the way Apple's in-app purchases work is that purchases are tied to the Apple ID in use, and so if you're using the same Apple ID on both devices Apple will only require one purchase.

    Hi @Ben,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I failed to mention that the Apple ID is a family member of the first Apple ID for sharing purchase stuff. I just mention this since it might be useful info somehow.

    Two new questions:

    1. You said "you could have one vault that is shared between the two devices". Since the two devices are using different Apple IDs for the iCloud login, I'm assuming that the shared vault would have to go through Dropbox and could not be done via iCloud.

    2. If I was to spend $65 on the Mac version (not preferred, but hypothetical), could the Mac version allow for the creation of a 3rd shared vaults between for the two devices? As in question 1, would this solution have to go through Dropbox rather than iCloud for the shared one?

    Thank you,
    Dylan

  • I failed to mention that the Apple ID is a family member of the first Apple ID for sharing purchase stuff.

Just to be clear: both devices would have to be signed into the same Apple ID for purchasing in order to share a purchase; otherwise they will require separate purchases. Apple does not allow in-app purchases to be shared with Family Sharing.

You said "you could have one vault that is shared between the two devices". Since the two devices are using different Apple IDs for the iCloud login, I'm assuming that the shared vault would have to go through Dropbox and could not be done via iCloud.

    That is accurate, yes.

If I was to spend $65 on the Mac version (not preferred, but hypothetical), could the Mac version allow for the creation of a 3rd shared vaults between for the two devices? As in question 1, would this solution have to go through Dropbox rather than iCloud for the shared one?

Yes, and yes, though our recommendation would still be a 1Password Families membership. We're no longer marketing standalone licenses.
