Deleting and Restoring 1Password App to Preserve Privacy

I am running 1Password Pro on an iPhone 7 (iOS 10.2.1 and 1P 6.5.3) and syncing to an iPad (iOS 10.2.1 and 1P 6.5.3) and Mac laptop (Mac app store 6.6) using iCloud. Since I travel internationally, I am considering deleting the app on my iPhone and iPad (I don't travel with my laptop) before passing through international borders.

I had the following questions. (1). By deteting the app on my iPhone and iPad, I'm assuming that all data, including the master password, stored on these devices is also deleted and unrecoverable? (2). If I re-download the 1P app from the Apple App store and restore the Pro purchase, the 1P app will also redownload the encrypted data stored on iCloud including PDF attachments and 2FA settings? 3). I'm assuming that there is no limit to how often I can delete and restore the 1P app.

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi @planetkingdom,

Thanks for taking the time to write in.

Erasing 1Password from an iOS device does delete all associated data from that device. If you're going to do so, and are not using a 1Password.com subscription account, I'd highly recommend making a backup first:

    1Password backups

As long as you re-download 1Password using the same Apple ID that you used to purchase the Pro features they will be restored automatically as part of the installation process. If you were syncing 1Password with iCloud prior to erasing it you can certainly sync your data back to the device by setting up syncing with iCloud in 1Password again. I would still highly recommend making a backup before deleting, though. There is no limit imposed by AgileBits, and I'm not aware of one imposed by Apple, for how often you can install the app.

Thanks for the reply and information. A back-up is an essential practice.

Just to clarify, I use 1P's autheticator for 2FA. Are the authenticator settings restored when the 1P app re-syncs with iCloud?

    Thanks for your help!

  • The TOTP field is just another field on your Login items. As long as the sync with iCloud is set up properly all records are maintained (encrypted) within iCloud, and so when you set up what is essentially a new device at that point all of that information will sync back down.

My phone is going in for repair and I have made a 1P backup saved to my Mac and have deleted the app. I normally use WLAN to keep things synced so when I restore the backup to the phone will WLAN sync work as before?

  • @Welshdog

You'll likely need to set up WLAN syncing again.

Worked perfectly with the WLAN - thanks!
