1Password requested my computer's password when I tried to update. Why? Is this safe?

1Password is prompting me to update to 1Password for Mac 6.6.4. It says there have been 2 upgrades since I last updated. When I launched the update, it asked for the password to my Mac to update. I don't recall it doing that in the past. Is this safe? Why does 1Password need my computer's password?

1Password Version: 6.6.2
Extension Version: 4.6.3
OS Version: OS X 10.11.6
Sync Type: not sure

  • Hi @roberts_clan! This typically doesn't happen. Could you post a screenshot of that prompt to give us a better idea of what its purpose might be? If you're installing the update manually using the .pkg file from our downloads page then this would happen, but the updater usually doesn't prompt for your login password.
