Data Not Populating In Vaults

Hi!

I work at a small business and am trying to sync my company's 1Password vaults to my laptop (we use 3). I've been able to sync our primary vault to my machine, but I can't with the 2nd and 3rd. I'm able to root the 2nd and 3rd to their proper keygen directories, but none of the data populates in my desktop apps. Any ideas as to why?

  • Hi @IamMattFried - Thank you for reaching out to us. Are you using a Mac or PC and are you trying to sync additional vaults using Dropbox? Sorry just trying to get a better understanding of the issue. Any additional details will be appreciated :-) Talk to you soon.

Hi @Frank: no worries! Yes, we're trying to sync through DropBox on a Mac ecosystem.

@IamMattFried: Unfortunately without some basic information you left out of your post, it's hard to say what might be going wrong and how we might right it! Please tell me the OS, 1Password, and device versions you're using, the exact steps you're taking, and what is (or is not) happening the way you expect so we can figure out the best plan of action:

    Find your version

The more information you can give, the better. For instance, have you installed the Dropbox client on the Mac? Have you sync'd all of the data there? Are you seeing the 1Password vault in the Dropbox folder? Thanks in advance! :)

    Hi @brenty:

Thank you for the clarification. This is going to be a bit long, but I hope it works.

I'm operating on mac OS Sierra, 10.12.4, syncing with 1Password 6.6.4, all on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, late 2012).

I'm trying to sync 1Password via my company's Dropbox (DB) - where each keygen lives for its own vaults. From the get-go, both myself and a colleague were having issues connecting to the Primary keygen. My boss purchased his license back in - I want to say - 2014. He works off of 1Password5, so I think the way his DB sync was set-up was slightly different.

    Anyway...

    1) Once 1PW was on my machine, I attempted to sync my Primary vault via the DB keygens. Continually, 1PW would allow me to select a path to the keygen and map to them, but when I tried to press "Continue" to connect the sync - nothing would happen. The window to connect wouldn't respond. After a few more tries, I gave up and exited the window.

    2) I was eventually able to sync 1PW to my machine, but I quickly discovered that any changes I made to the account - adding a new password to the Primary vault, for example - would only save on my machine and not sync to the rest of my account. When I checked my sync settings, I discovered that the DB sync was not active and the data from the keygen saved to my machine but did not sync me to our company's 1PW account.

    3) Out of curiousity, I found the path to the keygens via exploring my Mac user profile. When I got to the DB folder where all the keygens lived, I opened it and clicked on the keygen subfolder I was trying to sync my 1PW with. When I clicked on it, the folder opened and my 1PW app opened and immediately established the sync I wanted - however, it created a new vault called "1Password" and now lives alongside my Primary Vault - which is only local to my machine, and therefore: superfluous.

    4) In an attempt to add the additional vaults I need on my machine, I attempted the same process as outlined in step 3. While I was successful in physically adding a new vault after the "1Password" vault, the new vault did not populate any data that my company has saved in their profile.

Does all of that make sense?

    Hi @IamMattFried,

Thank you for the details! Just to make sure I understand - when you refer to "keygens", are you talking about the 1Password sync files in the Dropbox folder on your Mac (which should be either .agilekeychain or .opvault bundles)?

It sounds like you have a sync file in Dropbox for each vault you use in 1Password, and if those sync files were all up to date, the easiest solution would be to reset the 1Password app and try setting it up again. However, it sounds like you've made some changes in the app which did not sync to Dropbox, and I don't want you to lose those.

Before doing anything else, you should make a new backup of the current 1Password data on your Mac. From the main 1Password app, go to File > Backup. That will open the Backup preferences and show all your backups, including the new one you just made.

Next, to avoid confusion, remove any "duplicate vaults" you accidentally added (for example, the new vault called "1Password" you created by double-clicking the sync file in Dropbox which should have been syncing with your Primary vault). To do that, open 1Password and switch to the 'duplicate' vault using the vault switcher in the top left corner of the window. Then go to 1Password > Delete [vault name] Vault from the menu bar. When doing this, just make sure you don't delete a vault if it contains changes that haven't synced to Dropbox. When you're done with that, you should have one copy of each vault in 1Password.

Now, go to 1Password > Preferences > Sync and select each vault listed on the left to see which ones are currently syncing with Dropbox. (It sounds like the Primary vault on your Mac is not currently syncing, but I'm not sure about the others.) If a vault shows "None" as the sync setting, you'll need to change that to "Dropbox", click the Choose button, then select that vault's specific .agilekeychain or .opvault sync file from Dropbox (and click Open). Click Merge with Existing to start syncing (enter that vault's master password if prompted).

Let us know how everything goes up to this point, and we'll continue from there. Thanks!
