A wee issue with printing

Dear all,

I printed a few pages from our 1Password database today from the iOS application using AirPrint. It all felt deliciously futuristic and worked remarkably well, although I bumped into one real little bug and one possible bug… :dizzy:

The possible bug is that it appears that 1Password formats the page as US Letter instead of A4. We use A4 paper where I work and our AirPrint apps correctly set the paper size to A4 by default, but the preview from 1Password looked suspiciously like a US letter-formatted rectangle. I am afraid I cannot be sure, though, and would be glad to test further if you wish me to do so. :scream:

The real bug is that notes are clipped and zoom the page out. Some of the pages I printed had long notes attached. The notes were clipped, with the lines of text running straight off the edge of the page. Because 1Password — or the AirPrint bot — attempted to fit as much text as possible onto the page before it was clipped off, the entire page was zoomed out as well, with the login, password, and other non-note information appearing much smaller than on pages containing no notes, even though they were far, from reaching even half-way across the page itself. :ohnoes:

  • Hi @Deleted User

Thanks for the feedback. I don't disagree that the formatting for printing leaves something to be desired. That said it seems unlikely that with the massive movement toward a paperless environment that we currently see that we'll be able to justify spending much (if any) time improving printing functions. That said, we do have an issue open in our bug tracker for this, and I'll add your comments there.

Thank you, @Ben. I agree that paperless is the way. However, printing still seems important in 1Password's very specific niche, if only because the application itself recommends printing an emergency recovery kit for each user.

It has long been a tradition here to print not only the kit (as you suggest) but also a handful of key passwords that would enable the continuity of our business should the worst come to pass. In that light, we do exceedingly little printing, but what little we do is of paramount importance to us. (Not that I expect our needs to influence your roadmap. This is just to explain the rationale behind this seemingly charmingly retro preoccupation.)

  • Fair enough, @Deleted User :) Thanks for taking the time to share your use case. I've added those comments to the issue report as well. That said I do not believe this issue affects the printing of Emergency Kits. Have you experienced an issue with that?

No, no, rest assured the Emergency Kit prints out beautifully. :+1:

  • Excellent. Thanks. :)
