Hi @SpokaneDude -- 1Password can help you store all sorts of important data, but for the present, in 1Password for Mac, we aren't able to fill passwords directly into Applications. Web fields and logins, yes. Applications, no. On iOS, Apple provided a framework for developers to add extensions into their apps, but even there, each individual developer has to add our extension code into their application, for you to be able to use 1Password in a native iOS app.

And since no such universally recognized mechanism exists yet in macOS, there's no way to fill in a password into a Mac app that's as convenient as filling into a web login. Having said that, it doesn't mean you can't store a good app password in 1Password, only that you'll have to copy and paste in order to get it to work in terms of filling. In fact, you can actually edit the software license you may have already stored in 1Password for your accounting app: just click Edit, scroll down and add a new password field. If you switch the field-type selector to password, it will be obfuscated with dots, just like a web login password field. If you don't have a Software License record for your accounting app, you could create a Secure Note and do the same thing. Let us know if you have any problems!

Thanks Lars for the info... since the accounting data is stored on the Cloud, is there a way to password protect the data and when the app tries to access it, 1Password would then ask for the password before allowing the app to access the data?

  • @SpokaneDude,

No, 1Password doesn't deal with encrypting external resources. You would need to use something like an encrypted disk image to wrap unencrypted data on an external storage medium like the cloud.

@SpokaneDude - you're quite welcome. There are plenty of encryption programs that interface with cloud-storage services, so you should be able to find something that fits your needs.
