3rd Party Browser Integration

There are many security situations where 3rd Party Apps are supplying their own specific browsers.

Gambling blockers, and very soon SafeToNet which is an innovative child protection software. (A work in progress)

Unfortunately 3rd party browsers are not working as intended via 1Password.

Are you able to allow users to chose their browser of choice and to ensure it works as intended with your software.

For reference Safari is deleted or blocked and the 3rd party browser is the only one the phone/IPad/Mac user is permitted to use.

@HowardGS: No, we cannot support every browser out there. A lot of development, testing, and support is involved with each one we do. But...can you be more specific? 1Password integrates with browsers very differently on each platform. It won't be at all possible to integrate with browsers that do not offer an extension framework, and if they are doing something like supporting Chrome extensions but not fully that can be an impediment as well.

    Hi Brenty

My friend is a gambler and has BetFilter but not being very technically minded struggles to deal with the browsers needs when 1P doesn’t open up sites like for instance Gas, Electricity and Banking sites.

Safe To Net is a new App that will have numerous filters from Gambling to Porn and other abusive sites plaguing children.

I am presuming their browsers are based on one of the market leaders and as they are protecting vulnerable people it would be great is this sector could be supported even if it’s not easy.

What a great positive advert for your brand that would be.

  • @HowardGS: Without knowing more about the behind-the-scenes designs of these browsers, it's really difficult for us to say anything definitive. We have definitely worked with third-party browser developers in the past to allow 1Password to work in these browsers, but there are a lot of factors to consider when making that decisions. These range from available tools (such as an extension framework as Brenty mentioned) to the security of our customers (avoiding unsigned browsers, for example). It would be great if we could port, say, the Chrome extension to any and all Chromium-based browser and know we're doing so effectively, safely, and securely, but that's just not the case. If the developers of these browsers are interested in having 1Password support, of course, we're always willing to have a chat. :+1:

I think fundamentally there's a disincentive for them to allow 3rd party integration. After all, that would allow extensions to accidentally or intentionally bypass their restrictions. I don't see any developer info — or even what (if any) browser engine they're using — on their website. So I have to be honest: I don't see it happening.

I am an early adopter of SafeToNet and was in contact with the Lead of the London based team who are based in a technology building with 02 (the major UK cell provider).

They are just working on their browser so I am sure they would be only too pleased to work with you for this product which will be worldwide in a staged rollout.

I will ask Sharon Pursey to make contact.

With regard to BetFilter, it’s an annual fee, they have large market share and possibly there is little incentive but I will asK them to make contact also in the he hope that improving their software in use is a good enough reason to care.

I appreciate your wish to benefit the vulnerable of all ages if it becomes viable. I have worked in both areas mentioned and all help literally saves lives.

@HowardGS: Totally. Have them shoot us an email at support+extension@agilebits.com so our browser folks see it. :)

I have emailed both groups and would appreciate (if possible) even if by pm or email, some feedback especially on BetFilter as I know Sharon will be keen to make their product cutting edge.

Thanks for your willingness to listen and do what you can.

I have just had a very positive response from BetFilter (support at betfilter dot com) so I hope that as promised they will make contact to collaborate with you.

  • @HowardGS: I, too, hope to hear from them. I can't make any promises on behalf of the development team as the resources they have available will certainly be a factor, but having both friends and family in social work, I do hope we're able to play some small part in helping these folks through recovery. Thanks for serving as an advocate (both for 1Password and for folks that benefit from these browsers). :chuffed:
