Opening 1Password first time after iPhone reboots doesn't offer Touch ID automatically

Here's a situation:
I reboot my iPhone and I want to open 1Password (not necessarily straight after the phone restarts, it can be later). I'm presented with a screen with password field and Touch ID icon as per attached screenshot:

I have to tap on Touch ID icon and then rest my finger on Touch ID button to unlock 1Password:

Why do I not have an option to log in using Touch ID? It works after first log in but why not on first log in after phone reboot?
I'm running iOS 11.1.2 and latest 1Password 7.0.3 but if I remember this problem was in previous 6.x versions of app.

  • Hi @stalar,

This is intentional. The purpose is to remind you that you have a Master Password, and that you absolutely cannot forget it. :) If you do and Touch ID stops working for any reason you'll be unable to recover your data.

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

That's an interesting answer but doesn't make much sense to be honest. So what if Touch ID stops working when I want to open 1Password 2nd time?

    Hi @stalar,

So what if Touch ID stops working when I want to open 1Password 2nd time?

Any time Touch ID stops working to unlock 1Password you'll need to enter your Master Password to unlock it.

    Quoting from our support article:

Sometimes, you’ll need to enter your Master Password instead of using Touch ID:

    • If your fingerprint isn’t recognized three times in a row
    • If you tapped Settings > Security > Lock Now
    • If you’re trying to change your Master Password
    • If Require Master Password is set to After Device Restart in Settings > Advanced > Security, and you’ve just restarted your device
    • If the amount of time in Settings > Advanced > Security > Require Master Password has elapsed

And this article explains how to manage your auto-lock settings:

How to set 1Password to lock automatically

Let us know if you've got other questions about that, or anything else. :)

Sorry @sjk but that isn't related to my original post and doesn't answer my question.

I repeat again: I open 1Password and I can see screen as per screenshot 1, I do not have to enter my password but instead I can tap Touch ID icon and log in with Touch ID (as seen on on screenshot 2) and now every next time I open 1password I can see only scren 2 until I reboot my iPhone again.

What about this from release notes from version 6.4.1 (build #641004) – released 2016-05-18:

"Fixed an issue that caused 1Password to show the Master Password field and Touch ID icon when it should have prompted directly for Touch ID."

I have master password disabled completely in Settings > Advanced > Security, I mean even after reboot it shouldn't ask for password.

  • That is correct, and how it is designed to work. You can get back to screen 1 if you prefer that by hitting ‘cancel’ on the request for Touch ID.

@Ben, what about my last post from 8:35PM ?

  • It appears we were both composing replies at the same time.

You cannot disable the Master Password. It is used to encrypt your data. At the end of the day it is the only thing that can decrypt your data. Touch ID does not replace the Master Password.

I didn't say I disabled Master Password completely. I said that you found there was a bug and you said you fixed it but apparently you didn't.

No, we did. The issue was that screen #1 was appearing more frequently than intended, and that was fixed. The intention is for 1Password to operate as you’ve described in your original post.

I have master password disabled completely in Settings > Advanced > Security, I mean even after reboot it shouldn't ask for password.

It doesn’t require the Master Password (which you’ll see is what that setting is for). It asks for it, but you can skip entering it by hitting the Touch ID icon and then authenticating with Touch ID.

    Thanks.
