"Failed to list remote data folder in Dropbox"

I have been using 1Password successfully for years (thanks!) across multiple devices (Windows, iPhone, iPad) and synchronization has been occurring successfully via dropbox during that time.

However, recently, I noticed that an update made on one device was not being reflected on another device.

When I examined the synch entry in settings, I noticed that there was an error being displayed which indicated, "Failed to list remote data folder in Dropbox."

In looking elsewhere on this forum for solutions, one of the prior recommendations was to disable synch on the iPad, and then reenable synch on the iPad.

However, when I went to disable synch on the iPad, I received a message which indicated in part, "locally cached dropbox data will be removed." Since there are likely entries in the iPad which have not yet been synchronized to the other devices, this would seem to cause a loss of iPad 1Password data, selected not proceed with disabling of the synchronization. (There have likely been unique updates which have been made on each of the 3 devices, which have not been synchronized to the other devices.)

Please provide additional information regarding the above message regarding locally cached dropbox data, and also recommend how to proceed to rectify this synchronization issue.

On a separate note, I would suggest that the user interface of 1Password be updated so that a sync error is displayed prominently in the main user interface. It is not appropriate for me to happenstantially find out that the devices have not been synching for quite some time, because the error messages are buried under the settings synch submenu!

  • Hi @tparham

Unfortunately we have limited insight into Dropbox to see 1) if it is syncing properly and 2) if not, why not. This was one of the primary motivating factors for us to build the 1Password.com membership service. It just became all too common for Dropbox (or iCloud) to “fall out of sync,” as you’ve experienced, with no real explanation as to why that had occurred. In many cases it might’ve been weeks or even months after the problem occurred before it was noticed and by that point data may be significantly different on each device making the process that much more painful.

The first thing I’d recommend doing here before trying to massage Dropbox back into a working state is to back up your 1Password data:

    1Password backups

Once you’ve done so please review this guide:

If you're having trouble syncing with Dropbox

In this guide we’ve collected all of the troubleshooting steps we’ve determined over the years that may be helpful in coalescing your data back into a single database on Dropbox. It also outlines the options should those steps not resolve the issue for you.

I hope that helps! Please let us know how it turns out.

I am trying to follow your backup comments:

    • CreatediOS iPad backup.
    • Connected to Windows iTunes.
    • Selected 1Password from list of apps in Windows iTunes.
    • Grabbed and selected backup folder.
    • But dropping Backup folder into desktop or into a Windows Explorer folder does not work. (A copy of Backup folder is not created in either location..)
  • I believe on Windows when you get to that last step there is a “save” or “save as” button that you’d need to use instead of dragging. Do you see that?

    Unfortunately, no.
(Also tried right clicking on folder to see if such a choice would appear.)

@tparham: Did you try to left-click to select the Backups folder? It's worth a shot, but may not work if you're having trouble dragging. This is a known issue with iTunes on some versions of Windows. There isn't a workaround I'm aware of, but perhaps Apple knows of one.

  • @tparham,

Its worth noting here that neither of the versions you're running on your iPad or iPhone are capable of talking to Dropbox anymore. You need to be running at least 1Password 6.7 in order to be able to communicate with Dropbox. The versions you have listed in your original post use the old dropbox API that is no longer usable. Per https://support.1password.com/system-requirements/

Updated iPhone and iPad 1Password versions to version 7.0.4. Sync error seems to be gone and 1Password appears to be syncing correctly. When I get time will have to manually inspect recent records to verify correct operation / sync.

How do I see which records changed most recently?

  • Hi @tparham,

On iOS there isn’t a way to sort by most recently updated at this time. Glad to hear that Dropbox appears to be working better now with the latest version installed, though.

If we can be of further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
