New 1Password sign-in from Chrome
So I believe I made the original suggestion here which was quickly added but I logged in today to find that it's been downgraded. I now only get the state and country which is pretty but not nearly as useful. That being said I did find the IP is used as the alt for the image, adding it as a title too would be an improvement so you could see it on hover but not very user friendly.
I still feel for the more tech savvy (or future users that become more savvy) it should be included in the copy of the email. It's extremely comforting and way more valuable than the state and country. Also if you were to do the state and country it would not hurt to drill down to the city.
Thanks,
Tom

@tommyent: What do you mean by "downgraded"?

I'm not sure that I would describe IP addresses as "user friendly", but I'll let the team know you're still interested in us updating the new sign in emails to make the IP more prominent.

The problem is that none of this is truly reliable so it's hard to pin down the best way to present it. IPs are useless to most people as well. Before you take exception to that, consider that I usually get new sign in emails with IPs completely different than my own. Why? I use a VPN most of the time, so my IP doesn't remotely reflect my location. And a lot of advanced users — the kind who are going to care about the IP address — often will as well. And the vast majority of users won't know or care about an IP address. "Location" based on IP just isn't accurate enough to resolve to a city, when it often gets the state/province/prefecture wrong. Maybe we'll be able to come up with a better solution in the future. For now we're just trying to strike good balance with this. I'm glad you like the IP being included as the alt text at least. Thanks for the feedback! :)

Sorry so I failed to explain myself clearly.
Downgraded by removing the IP address from the email. You removed useful information and replaced it with less useful information.
It used to look like
It now looks likeThe IP is not user friendly for a lot. However what I was trying to explain is the IP is used as the alt attribute but would be more user friendly as the title attribute since the alt you would either need to have images disabled or look at the code to see the IP address where as the title it would show on hover.
<img style="float:left;padding-right:25px" **alt="8.8.8.8"** src="https://a.1password.com/app/images/emails/devices/chrome.png" width="96" height="96" class="CToWUd">
Obviously it would be best to be included in the body of the email. The best way to present the IP is the actual IP. That was really the point I was trying to make. The location is fine for some people but as you've mentioned the accuracy will range depending on situations and user locations. For example for me it will get it down to the city I live in however in other countries or rural areas I have seen it vary a great deal.
I'm not arguing for more accurate location or removing the location I just don't see the reason to remove the IP from the email when it was the most useful. I use a VPN but I still know my IP addresses that I am using. With IPv4 there are 4 or 5 million addresses knowing which one connected for me is far better than which state as as you've pointed out is not all that accurate anyway. This would get even better with IPv6 since theoretically it could be down to the actual device.
And a lot of advanced users — the kind who are going to care about the IP address
Just feels like another "advanced user" feature being stripped out or changed for the "majority". While I have not always agreed with the changes I understood it. However
IPs are useless to most people as well
so for those users it's nothing more than a number. Those are the people who probably could care less about the emails in the first place or are the people that are going to call me and tell me they got this email that says..... and the first thing I am going to have to do is say ok can you right click on the image then choose inspect now look for alt= what does that say.

@tommyent: Ah, thank you for clarifying. While we didn't actually remove it (as you yourself noted), I'm sorry that we hid some information that you found useful. As I mentioned though, this isn't useful to the vast majority of people, so I think it's a reasonable compromise: you can still get the IP if you need to, but it's not shown prominently. That can be confusing since most people don't know their IP address in the first place. I think this is key:
I use a VPN but I still know my IP addresses that I am using.
I'm a fairly technical user, and I have no idea what my IP is pretty much ever nowadays. Truth be told, I used to, back when I had a dedicated line and didn't use a VPN. Most people don't know or care about any of that, and even many of those who do — or once did.
so for those users it's nothing more than a number.
Right, and we're reticent to include information in emails that go out to users which isn't actionable or useful to them. I'm not saying this won't change and that there isn't room for improvement. The feedback is greatly appreciated, even if this isn't something that needs to be changed urgently. Cheers! :)
